About Buddhist Maha Vihara

The Buddhist Maha Vihara was founded in the 1890s by the Sinhalese community and is the main Theravada temple in Kuala Lumpur. The white shrine hall holds a large seated Buddha, and the grounds include a stupa, a bodhi tree and several smaller shrines. It is the starting point for KL's Wesak Day procession, when tens of thousands of devotees gather.

Visitors are welcome in the shrine hall with shoes removed and dress modest. The temple runs meditation classes and Dhamma talks; check the notice board or its website for the current timetable. It is a 10-minute walk from KL Sentral and close to Sri Kandaswamy Kovil.
