Ipoh Attractions: 12 Places to Visit in the City and Nearby
Ipoh is a Perak city of limestone hills, tin-mining heritage and colonial-era streets, and most Ipoh attractions are cheap or free. This guide covers 12 places that were checked for October 2026: 10 inside the city or its Tambun and Bercham suburbs, plus 2 day trips from Ipoh (Kellie's Castle and Gua Tempurung) that are easy by car. Cave temples, mosques and churches are listed separately in the Ipoh temples guide.
The Old Town heritage core is compact. Concubine Lane, the Birch Memorial Clock Tower, Han Chin Pet Soo, the Town Hall and the railway station are all within about 15 minutes on foot of one another, so a single morning covers them. The lakes, the theme park and the day trips need a car or e-hailing ride. Entry prices below were checked against guides and news reports dated 2025 and 2026 and can change; where sources disagreed, the entry says so.

Concubine Lane (Lorong Panglima)
Concubine Lane is a short pedestrian alley of restored shophouses in Ipoh Old Town. Local tradition says wealthy tin miners once kept second wives here; today the lane holds souvenir shops, snack stalls, old-style cafes and a boutique hotel. It is the most visited street in the Old Town and the easiest place to start a heritage walk.
It is busiest at weekends and in the late morning, and most traders shut by late afternoon. Go early for photographs. Nearby Jalan Bandar Timah has kopitiam where you can try Ipoh white coffee.
Ipoh Mural Art Lane
The Mural Art Lane is a lane of large wall paintings in Ipoh New Town, across the Kinta River from the Old Town. The works include scenes of local life and the Ipoh white coffee culture; one of the artists associated with Ipoh street art is Ernest Zacharevic.
It takes 15 to 20 minutes and costs nothing. Morning light is kinder to the paintings, and the lane is easy to combine with a coffee stop in the New Town.
Ipoh Railway Station
Ipoh Railway Station, nicknamed the Taj Mahal of Ipoh, opened in 1917 and mixes Moorish domes and arches with a colonial frame. It is still a working KTM station, and the building also houses the Majestic Station Hotel.
Walk the front arcade and the platform side for photographs. The station stands beside the Town Hall, so the two can be seen together in a few minutes. After dark the front is lit; see the Ipoh night view guide.
Ipoh Town Hall (Dewan Bandaran)
The white colonnaded Town Hall (Dewan Bandaran) stands close to the railway station. The date on its facade reads 1914. A disused old post office sits within the same complex.
Most visitors only photograph the exterior. A listing from a local guide gives 7 am to 7 pm, but we could not confirm interior opening, so treat it as an outside stop.
Birch Memorial Clock Tower
The Birch Memorial Clock Tower dates from 1909 and commemorates J.W.W. Birch, the first British Resident of Perak, who was killed in 1875. It stands on a small square in the Old Town and is one of the most photographed monuments in Ipoh.
It is a 5 to 10 minute stop, easy to fit between Concubine Lane and the railway station.
Han Chin Pet Soo Museum
Han Chin Pet Soo is a 1929 Art Deco building that served as a club for Hakka tin miners, now a small museum of Ipoh's tin-mining history. Rooms re-create the dining hall, the gambling room and the tin shop.
Entry is by reservation only: Ipoh World, which runs the museum, takes bookings on its website up to 30 days ahead, and visiting times are given when you book. Individual visitors give a donation; the fixed RM10 adult and RM5 child fee on its booking page applies to commercial tour groups.
Darul Ridzuan Museum
The Darul Ridzuan Museum is a colonial-era building north of the centre that now holds exhibits on Perak state history and heritage. It is a calm indoor option for a hot or rainy afternoon.
The Perak State Museum Department's page lists free entry and daily visiting from 10 am to 5 pm, with a long Friday midday break.
Geological Museum Ipoh
Ipoh's Geological Museum is run by the Department of Minerals and Geoscience and shows minerals, rocks and fossils, with a focus on the tin-rich Kinta Valley that made Ipoh rich.
The department's museum page says current opening hours will be posted once confirmed, so phone or check that page before you go; older listings give weekday-only hours with a lunch break. Allow about an hour.
Gunung Lang Recreational Park
Gunung Lang is a lakeside park ringed by limestone hills, mostly reached by a short boat ride from the jetty. It has walking paths, a watch tower, picnic areas and views of the karst cliffs, and it suits families and casual walkers.
Ipoh City Council suspended the boat service from 29 May to 4 June 2026 to repair two boats, so check that boats are running before you go. Daytime only; there is no evening opening.
Sunway Lost World of Tambun
Lost World of Tambun is a water and theme park built against a limestone hill in Tambun, on the north-eastern edge of Ipoh. It has water rides, a petting zoo and natural hot springs, and a Night Park runs from 6 pm to 11 pm.
Prices are the walk-in rates on the park's ticket page in October 2026; online tickets and promotions can be cheaper. Children 90 cm and under enter free. The park is a full-day outing, and the hot springs night session is a cooler alternative to a daytime visit.
Kellie's Castle
Kellie's Castle is an unfinished mansion begun by the Scottish planter William Kellie Smith, with Moorish and Gothic touches and passages inside the walls. It stopped when he died in 1926 and is now a heritage site.
Since January 2025 it has opened until 10 pm. The castle is lit from 7 pm, and evening visits include guided tram tours. See the Ipoh night view guide for the evening visit. Management now presents it as a colonial landmark rather than a haunted house.
Gua Tempurung
Gua Tempurung is one of the largest limestone cave systems in Peninsular Malaysia. Tour options run from a short walk on lit walkways to longer tours that wade through the underground river, so pick the one that suits your fitness.
Prices come from a 2026 guide and depend on the tour. Wear shoes you can get wet and bring a change of clothes for the longer routes. We could not confirm current tour times, and last tours have usually gone out in the early afternoon, so aim to arrive before noon.
Planning Your Day Among Ipoh Attractions
Start with the Old Town on foot in the morning, before the heat builds. Concubine Lane shops and stalls trade mainly in the daytime, so go early in the day rather than at dusk. Han Chin Pet Soo takes visitors by online reservation only, so book before you arrive.
Keep the afternoon for the lakes and caves. Gunung Lang and Gua Tempurung are daytime visits, so check their current hours before you set out. Kellie's Castle stays open until 10 pm, so it works as an evening stop on the way back from Gua Tempurung.
Most sights have no public transport link. E-hailing (Grab) is the practical choice inside the city; for Kellie's Castle and Gua Tempurung a rental car or a booked driver saves time. Carry some cash for small entry fees and boat rides.
Ipoh Attractions: FAQ
What are the best free attractions in Ipoh?
Concubine Lane, the Mural Art Lane, the Birch Memorial Clock Tower and the outside of Ipoh Railway Station and the Town Hall are all free and can be walked in one morning. Gunung Lang Recreational Park has no entrance fee; you pay a small fare for the boat to reach it.
How much is Kellie's Castle admission?
A news report from August 2025 gave RM9 for adults, RM7 for children and RM6 for senior citizens. The castle is open daily from 9:30 am to 10 pm with last admission at 9:30 pm. Older guides list lower or different prices for foreign visitors, so check the ticket counter.
Is Lost World of Tambun open every day?
No. The theme park is closed on Tuesdays except school and public holidays. Walk-in day tickets are RM160 for adults (RM125 with a MyKad), and the evening Hot Springs Night Park, open daily from 6 pm to 11 pm, is RM130 walk-in (RM105 with a MyKad). Check the Sunway Lost World of Tambun website for the current calendar.
How long do I need for Ipoh attractions?
One full day covers the Old Town heritage walk plus one lake or cave. Two days lets you add Lost World of Tambun or the day trips to Kellie's Castle and Gua Tempurung without rushing.
Can I visit Ipoh attractions without a car?
The Old Town sights are walkable. Everything else, including Gunung Lang, Lost World of Tambun, Kellie's Castle and Gua Tempurung, is easier with Grab or a hired driver because public bus links are limited.
