Ipoh Hawker Food: 18 Local Stalls with Hours and Prices

A bowl of Ipoh hor fun, flat rice noodles in dark gravy with prawn, chicken and greens, typical of Ipoh hawker food

Ipoh hawker food is built around a few dishes the city does better than anywhere else in Malaysia: poached chicken with short bean sprouts, silky hor fun noodles in a prawn and chicken broth, dry curry mee, dim sum and white coffee. Most of the best stalls are in the Old Town and the New Town (Taman Jubilee), within a few kilometres of each other.

This guide covers 18 Ipoh hawker food stops with addresses, hours and prices where published, all checked against 2025 to 2026 sources in October 2026. Prices are in Malaysian Ringgit (RM). Hours change often and many stalls close one or two days a week, so we flag stalls where listings disagree. Bring cash, and read the halal flag on each entry.

Lou Wong Tauge Ayam

29-31 Jalan Yau Tet Shin, Taman Jubilee, 30300 Ipoh ¡ Hours: check before visiting ¡ About RM10 a plateNot halal-certified Queues Often sold out by evening ¡ Google Maps ¡ Verified Oct 2026

Lou Wong and Onn Kee tauge ayam restaurants on the corner of Jalan Yau Tet Shin and Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar, Ipoh, photographed in 2021 before Lou Wong moved down the road

Lou Wong is the best-known place for tauge ayam, Ipoh's poached chicken served with short, crunchy bean sprouts, a soy and sesame oil dressing and a bowl of rice, or flat rice noodles (kuey teow) in chicken broth. A plate costs about RM10. The restaurant moved in March 2026 from its old corner at no. 49 to larger premises less than 100 metres away on the same road, with more than 30 tables against the old 16.

Expect a queue at lunch and early evening, and a review from March 2026 says the chicken is often sold out by about 6 pm, so go before then. We could not confirm the opening hours at the new premises. It is a short walk from Ong Kee and from the Gerbang Malam night market, which makes a chicken-then-market evening easy to plan.

Ong Kee Tauge Ayam

48 Jalan Yau Tet Shin, Taman Jubilee, 30300 Ipoh · Daily 10 am – 9:30 pm · Price not posted onlineNot halal-certified · Google Maps · Verified Oct 2026

Ong Kee (also spelt Onn Kee) is the other famous bean sprout chicken shop on Jalan Yau Tet Shin, in a pre-war corner shophouse. A March 2026 review describes its sauce as saltier than Lou Wong's and notes that pork meatballs and chicken feet are on the menu. You can ask for kampung chicken, which has a firmer texture than the standard bird.

Many visitors eat at both shops to compare. A January 2025 TheSmartLocal guide lists it at 48/51 and 53 Jalan Yau Tet Shin, open 10 am to 9.30 pm daily.

Cowan Street Ayam Tauge & Koitiau

44 Jalan Raja Ekram, Kampung Jawa, 31350 Ipoh ¡ Hours: check before visiting (reported as Thursday to Sunday evenings) ¡ Check price at the stallNot halal-certified Queues Irregular hours ¡ Google Maps ¡ Verified Oct 2026

Cowan Street serves chicken and bean sprouts with flat rice noodles in a clear chicken broth. It does not serve rice. A March 2026 review calls the broth and the chicken innards the best part and says the chicken is a little salty. Locals queue before it opens at 6 pm.

It has been reported to trade only on Thursday to Sunday evenings, with irregular hours, and we could not confirm its current schedule in October 2026, so call +6012-520 3322 before making a special trip.

Restoran Thean Chun

73 Jalan Bandar Timah, Old Town, 30000 Ipoh ¡ Check hours before visiting (listings differ; usually morning to mid-afternoon) ¡ About RM10 a bowl of hor funNot halal-certified Queues at lunch Hours vary ¡ Google Maps ¡ Verified Oct 2026

Thean Chun is an old-style kopitiam in the Old Town, across from Concubine Lane. It is known for gai si hor fun (shredded chicken on flat rice noodles in broth, about RM10 a bowl), dry curry mee, curry chee cheong fun, pork and chicken satay and a caramel custard that can sell out by 10 am on busy days. Pork satay is on the menu, so it is not a halal option.

Published opening hours disagree. One August 2026 list gives 8 am to 4.30 pm and closed Wednesday and Thursday, while a January 2025 TheSmartLocal guide gives Friday to Wednesday, closed Thursday only. Call 05-255 3076 first. The queue can reach an hour around 12 to 1 pm, so aim for before 11 am.

Because every stall sets its own days and hours, go for breakfast or a late-afternoon visit if you want the wan tan mee or fish head noodles, and in the evening for chicken. Check halal signs stall by stall.

The food is Muslim-run and pork-free, but confirm halal certification with the stall if it matters to you. It is a small hawker stall, so expect shared tables and cash payments.

How to Plan a Day of Ipoh Hawker Food

Morning: Old Town kopitiams

Start early on Jalan Bandar Timah with white coffee at Sin Yoon Loong or Nam Heong, then walk to Thean Chun for hor fun or curry mee before 11 am. Most of these shops stop serving by early afternoon, and several close one or two days a week, so check the days before you go.

Lunch: Jalan Yau Tet Shin

Bean sprout chicken is a lunch dish. Lou Wong and Ong Kee are a short walk apart on the same road, so you can try both. Tau fu fah at Woong Kee and the Gerbang Malam arch are a short walk away.

Evening and late night

After about 5 pm the choice moves to Cowan Street (reported Thursday to Sunday), Tong Sui Kai for supper and dessert, the Stadium Indera Mulia hawker centre and the mamak restaurants. Naina Mohamed is listed as open all night. See our Ipoh night markets guide for pasar malam by day of the week.

Cash, queues and halal

Bring cash in RM1, RM5 and RM10 notes, since many old stalls do not take cards, though some now show a DuitNow QR code. Queues build at Lou Wong around noon and again early evening. Chinese-run kopitiams are not halal-certified; Muslim visitors should use the mamak restaurants and check signs at food courts.

Ipoh Hawker Food: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best hawker food in Ipoh?

Bean sprout chicken (tauge ayam) with kuey teow or rice is the signature Ipoh meal, served at Lou Wong and Ong Kee on Jalan Yau Tet Shin from about RM10 a plate. Ipoh hor fun, dry curry mee, white coffee and caramel custard are the other dishes most visitors look for.

Is Ipoh hawker food halal?

Most of the famous chicken, noodle and dim sum shops are Chinese-run and not halal-certified, and some serve pork. For halal or Muslim-friendly food, go to the Indian Muslim mamak restaurants and Nasi Ganja in this guide. Hawker centres such as Medan Selera Stadium Indera Mulia have both kinds of stall, so check signs.

What time do Ipoh hawker stalls close?

Many Old Town breakfast and noodle shops close between 1 pm and 4.30 pm, and several are closed on one or two days a week. For dinner, go to Ong Kee (open to 9.30 pm), Tuck Kee (10.30 pm), Tong Sui Kai (from 5 pm), the evening hawker centres or a mamak restaurant. Naina Mohamed is listed as open 24 hours.

Where did Lou Wong move to?

Lou Wong moved in March 2026 from 49 Jalan Yau Tet Shin to larger premises at 29-31 Jalan Yau Tet Shin, less than 100 metres away on the same road. Ong Kee is still at no. 48.

How much does a meal cost at an Ipoh hawker stall?

The few prices published for 2026 are about RM10 for a plate of bean sprout chicken or a bowl of chicken hor fun. Most stalls do not publish prices online, so allow RM8 to RM15 per dish and carry cash in small notes.
