Hospitals in Kuala Lumpur: 42 Government, Private and Specialist Hospitals
Last updated: October 2026
This guide lists 42 hospitals in Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding Klang Valley, with the address, main phone number and 24-hour emergency status for each, so you can find the right one quickly if you fall ill or get hurt while travelling. It covers government hospitals, private hospitals inside the city, the major private hospitals just outside KL in Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Kota Damansara and Ampang, and specialist hospitals for heart, eye, orthopaedic, cancer, women's and children's care.
Every entry was checked in October 2026 against Ministry of Health information, insurer panel hospital lists updated in 2026 and the hospitals' own published details. Medical care in KL is of a high standard and English is spoken in all of these hospitals. The main differences are cost and waiting time: government hospitals are cheaper but busier, while private hospitals are faster but charge for everything.
Phone numbers are main switchboard lines. In a life-threatening emergency, call 999 first. Hospital details change, so call ahead for anything that is not urgent.

Government hospitals in Kuala Lumpur
Government (Ministry of Health and university) hospitals have the largest emergency departments and the widest range of specialists, and they treat everyone who arrives in an emergency. Foreigners pay non-citizen rates, which are far higher than local rates but usually lower than private hospital bills. Expect long waits for anything that is not urgent. The first three are inside Kuala Lumpur; Hospital Selayang and Hospital Ampang are just outside the city boundary in Selangor.
Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL)
Hospital Kuala Lumpur is the Ministry of Health's flagship hospital and one of the largest public hospitals in Malaysia, spread across a large campus on Jalan Pahang north of the city centre. The 24-hour Emergency and Trauma Department takes walk-ins and 999 ambulance cases around the clock, and the campus also holds national referral centres for many specialities.
Expect long waits for anything that is not urgent, as patients are triaged by colour code and the most serious cases are seen first. Foreigners pay non-citizen rates: RM40 for a general outpatient visit and RM120 for a specialist outpatient visit, with a deposit required before admission. Staff speak Malay and English, and many also speak Mandarin, Cantonese or Tamil. The Hospital Kuala Lumpur MRT station (Putrajaya Line) stops at the gate.
Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM (HCTM)
HCTM is the teaching hospital of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras, formerly known as Pusat Perubatan UKM (PPUKM). It runs a 24-hour emergency department and a full range of specialist clinics, and the UKM Specialist Children's Hospital sits on the same campus.
For a shorter wait and a private-hospital style service, the UKM Specialist Centre, a private wing, operates inside the clinical block. Public-side charges for foreigners follow non-citizen rates. The hospital is about 15 minutes by Grab from Bukit Bintang; the nearest rail stop is Bandar Tun Razak (LRT Sri Petaling Line), a short taxi ride away.
University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC)
UMMC (Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya) is the teaching hospital of Universiti Malaya, on the edge of KL next to the Petaling Jaya border. It has a busy 24-hour emergency department and handles complex referrals in almost every speciality.
Like other public hospitals it charges foreigners non-citizen rates and asks for a deposit before admission. Visitors who prefer a private setting can use the UM Specialist Centre (listed below) next door. Universiti LRT station (Kelana Jaya Line) is about 1.5 km away; Grab is easier.
Hospital Selayang
Hospital Selayang is a large Ministry of Health hospital in Selangor, just north of the KL boundary. Practical tips for using hospitals in Kuala Lumpur
Government or private?
For a serious emergency, any hospital with a 24-hour emergency department will stabilise you first. For everything else, most travellers with insurance use private hospitals because waiting times are shorter and the insurer can arrange a guarantee letter. Without insurance, a government hospital is usually cheaper even at non-citizen rates, but expect to wait.
What to bring
Bring your passport (hospitals register foreigners by passport number), your travel insurance policy number and assistance phone number, a credit card for the deposit, and a list of any medicines you take. Keep receipts and the medical report for your insurance claim.
Costs and deposits
At Ministry of Health hospitals, foreigners pay RM40 for a general outpatient visit and RM120 for a specialist clinic visit, plus tests, medicines and ward charges, and a deposit is required before admission. At private hospitals, the doctor's consultation fee is regulated (RM80 to RM235 for a specialist), but hospital charges, tests and medicine are billed separately, and non-citizens have paid 6% SST on private healthcare since 1 July 2025. Ask for an estimate before any procedure.
Minor problems
For a cold, stomach upset or minor cut, a private GP clinic or a pharmacy (Guardian, Watsons, Caring and independent pharmacies are everywhere) is quicker and much cheaper than a hospital emergency department. Many neighbourhoods have a 24-hour clinic.
Getting there
For a non-life-threatening problem, a Grab car is often faster than waiting for an ambulance in KL traffic. Tell the driver the hospital's full name, since several share similar names (for example the three Columbia Asia and three Pantai hospitals in the Klang Valley).
Hospitals in Kuala Lumpur: Frequently Asked Questions
What number do I call for an ambulance in Kuala Lumpur?
Call 999 for ambulance, police or fire. From a mobile phone you can also dial 112, which connects to the same emergency service. Government ambulances usually take patients to the nearest government hospital, such as Hospital Kuala Lumpur. If you want a private hospital, call that hospital's emergency line directly; most large private hospitals run their own ambulances.
Which hospital is closest to KLCC and Bukit Bintang?
Prince Court Medical Centre on Jalan Kia Peng is the closest major private hospital to KLCC and most Bukit Bintang hotels. Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur on Jalan Ampang and Tung Shin Hospital on Jalan Pudu are also close. The nearest government hospital is Hospital Kuala Lumpur on Jalan Pahang. All four have 24-hour emergency departments.
How much does a hospital visit cost for a foreigner in Kuala Lumpur?
At government hospitals, non-citizens pay RM40 for a general outpatient visit and RM120 for a specialist clinic visit, plus tests and medicine, and a deposit before admission. At private hospitals, the specialist's consultation fee is set by law at RM80 to RM235, but hospital charges, tests and medicine come on top, and non-citizens pay 6% SST on private healthcare from 1 July 2025.
Do I need to pay a deposit at a private hospital in KL?
Usually yes for admission. Private hospitals ask foreigners for a deposit, often several thousand ringgit, before admitting them unless the travel insurer sends a guarantee letter. Emergency treatment starts before payment, but bring a credit card, your passport and your insurance policy details. Call your insurer's 24-hour assistance number as early as possible.
Are there any new hospitals in Kuala Lumpur?
Columbia Asia Hospital Bukit Jalil opened in February 2024 and Sunway Medical Centre Damansara in Kota Damansara opened in early 2025 and was officially launched in October 2026. KL International Hospital, part of the KL Wellness City project in Bukit Jalil, was reported as 85% complete in February 2026 and due for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026.
