History of Sunway Lagoon
In the 1980s the land that is now Sunway City was about 800 acres of abandoned tin-mining pools and sand on the edge of Petaling Jaya, one of the many old mining sites of the Klang Valley. Jeffrey Cheah, founder of the Sunway Group, set out to rehabilitate it as an integrated township; work on Sunway City began in 1988. The flooded mining pits were turned into lakes, and the centrepiece was a theme park built around them.
Sunway Lagoon began operating on 24 October 1992 with two parks, the Water Park and what was then called the Dry Park (now the Amusement Park), and was officially opened on 29 April 1993 by the prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad. Its Surf Beach was promoted as the world's largest man-made surf beach. The Egyptian-themed Sunway Pyramid mall opened next door in 1997, and a hotel, hospital, universities and offices followed, turning the old mine into one of the Klang Valley's busiest suburbs.
The park has kept expanding. The Extreme Park (now X Park) arrived in 2006 and 2007, followed by the Wildlife Park in 2007 and the Scream Park horror attraction in 2008. A FlowRider surf simulator came in 2010, the Waterplexx 5D cinema in 2012 and the Vuvuzela, billed as the world's largest vortex water ride when it opened, in 2013. Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon opened on 3 February 2016, the Night Park on 16 November 2022, Captain Quack Land in December 2024 and the Wild Chase water coaster, a 280-metre ride costing about RM30 million, on 10 May 2025. From 2009 to 2015 the park hosted the MTV World Stage concerts. Today Sunway says the park has more than 90 attractions, and it has been named Asia's best attraction by the industry body IAAPA.
The Parks at Sunway Lagoon
Water Park
The main draw. The Surf Beach wave pool covers about 13,000 square metres, with waves up to about 8 feet and an artificial volcano as a backdrop. Big slides include the Vuvuzela, where rafts drop into a giant funnel, the Congo Challenge six-lane racing slides and the Wild Chase water coaster. Quieter options include a lazy river, children's splash areas and shaded cabanas for hire.
Amusement Park
Dry rides themed around the American Wild West and lost cities, including the Lost City of Gold roller coaster, the Pirate's Revenge swinging ship, spinning rides such as Apache Pots and Tomahawk, the Grand Canyon River Rapids and a long pedestrian suspension bridge across the lake with views over Sunway City.
Wildlife Park
A small zoo with more than 150 species, including tigers, birds of prey, reptiles and a petting area with rabbits, tortoises and ponies. There are animal feeding sessions and shows through the day, and the park runs a wildlife hospital and children's education programmes.
X Park (Extreme Park)
Adventure activities such as the G Force X slingshot, quad bikes, go-karts, a climbing wall, bungee trampoline and a flying fox. Most of these carry an extra fee on top of the day ticket.
Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon
A jungle-themed area for younger children with Nickelodeon cartoon characters, smaller rides and play areas.
Night Park and Captain Quack Land
On selected evenings the park reopens as Night Park, with light shows, illuminated trails, the Night Zoo and Captain Quack Land. Night Park tickets, operating nights and timings vary, so check the official site before planning around it.

Tips for Visiting Sunway Lagoon
- Arrive at opening time, ride the big water slides first and leave the wildlife and amusement parks for the hotter middle of the day.
- Weekdays outside school holidays are much quieter. Remember the park is usually closed on Tuesdays.
- Proper swimwear is required in the water areas, and outside food is not allowed. Bring sunscreen, a hat and a waterproof phone pouch.
- Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Klang Valley, and outdoor rides may pause during lightning, so plan for breaks.
- Check height limits before queuing; some of the bigger rides have minimum heights that rule out young children.
- Sunway Pyramid next door has a wide choice of restaurants for dinner after the park closes.
