Exhibition hall with artworks on display inside Ilham Gallery, Kuala Lumpur

Ilham Gallery (styled ILHAM) is a free public art gallery inside Ilham Tower on Jalan Binjai, a short walk from KLCC and Ampang Park. Since it opened in August 2015 it has become one of the most respected exhibition spaces in Kuala Lumpur, known for research-heavy shows on Malaysian art history alongside major touring exhibitions of Southeast Asian and international artists. "Ilham" is the Malay word for inspiration.

There is no permanent display: each visit depends on what is showing on the two exhibition floors, so it rewards repeat trips. This guide covers the gallery's background and the tower it sits in, what to expect inside, current exhibitions as of October 2026, opening hours, directions and tips.

History of Ilham Gallery

Ilham Gallery opened on 22 August 2015 with Picturing the Nation, which ran until 17 January 2016. The show was built around the personal collection of Dato' Hoessein Enas, the pioneer painter who largely defined Malaysian portraiture after independence, and set his work against pieces by four contemporary artists: Ahmad Zakii Anwar, Dain Iskandar Said, Vincent Leong and Yee I-Lann. That pairing of historical material with contemporary responses set the tone for much of what followed.

The gallery's early programme was shaped by the art dealer and curator Valentine Willie as creative director, with Rahel Joseph as gallery director. Among its best-known exhibitions are Era Mahathir (2016), which looked at art made during Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's first 22 years as prime minister; an exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of the landmark 1967 GRUP show, developed with the art historian Simon Soon; and in 2018 the Kuala Lumpur leg of the Latiff Mohidin Pago-Pago exhibition, co-organised with the Centre Pompidou in Paris and National Gallery Singapore.

Ilham also holds its own collection of Malaysian and regional art, which can be browsed online by artist, date, medium and country, and it runs a learning and research programme alongside its exhibitions.

Ilham Tower: the Building

The gallery occupies part of Ilham Tower, a 58-storey, roughly 274-metre office and serviced-apartment tower designed by Foster + Partners and built between 2010 and 2015 by the Korean contractor Daewoo E&C. Its most recognisable feature is the diagonal exoskeleton of triangulated concrete frames and external trusses on the facade. The tower is owned through Ilham Baru Sdn Bhd, a company controlled by the family of the former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin.

What to See at Ilham Gallery

Exhibitions are held on Level 3 and Level 5 of the tower podium, often with a different show on each floor, each running for several months. The spaces are large, high-ceilinged and well lit, which suits installation and video art as well as painting.

Check the gallery's website before you go, because a floor may be closed between exhibitions while the next show is installed. There is a gift shop near the galleries.
