Money Changers in Selangor: 5 Counters at KLIA, klia2 and Sunway Pyramid

Money changers in Selangor: the pyramid and giant lion statue at the front of Sunway Pyramid in Bandar Sunway

Money changers in Selangor are spread thinly across a large state, mostly inside shopping malls, rather than clustered in one street as they are in Kuala Lumpur's city centre. For visitors the most useful counters are at the two airports in Sepang, which are open around the clock, and in the big malls around Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya.

This guide covers 5 licensed counters that we could confirm on an official page in October 2026: the Bank Islam currency exchange list for KLIA and klia2, and the Sunway Pyramid mall directory. Many other Selangor malls also have counters, but we only list ones we could check. Mid Valley Megamall and the city-centre money changers are in Kuala Lumpur, so they are on our Kuala Lumpur money changers guide. Rates change daily and each counter shows its own board, so we do not quote rates.

Bank Islam Currency Exchange has its main KLIA counter in the public (landside) arrival hall on Level 3 of the Terminal 1 main building, open 24 hours. Phone 03-8661 9966. The bank says it buys and sells notes in 30 currencies and charges no fees or commission; its margin is built into the rate.

Bank Islam also lists 24-hour counters on the Level 5 departure level, in the arrival immigration area, at the international contact pier and in the satellite building, which are useful if you are transiting. Airport rates are usually a little weaker than in town, so change just enough for transport and your first meals.

As at Terminal 1, there are no fees or commission, and the counter offers special rates for group and corporate purchases. Bring your passport, and count your notes at the counter before you walk away.

Money Changers in Sunway Pyramid (Bandar Sunway)

Sunway Pyramid in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, next to Sunway Lagoon, lists three money changers in its own directory, so you can compare rates in a few minutes' walk.

The counter does not appear on the branch list of the MaxMoney money transfer company, so treat it as a separate business and call to check hours and the currencies it holds. Counter hours are not published in the mall directory, so check before visiting.

It is the closest of the three to the main ground-floor entrances, which suits a quick stop before a day at Sunway Lagoon. Counter hours are not published in the mall directory, so check before visiting.

Tips for Using Money Changers in Selangor

Compare at least two boards

Licensed changers display their buying and selling rates. Look at the "we buy" column for the currency you are handing over, and compare two counters before changing more than a few hundred ringgit.

Airport rates are a little worse

Airport counters are convenient and open all night, but rates in town are usually better. Change enough at KLIA or klia2 for the train, a taxi or Grab top-up and your first meals, then change the rest in a mall.

Bring clean, undamaged notes

Torn, written-on, heavily creased or very old series notes may be refused or bought at a lower rate, especially US dollars. Large denominations usually get better rates than small notes.

Carry your passport

Licensed money changers must check customer identity on larger transactions under Bank Negara Malaysia rules. Bring your passport, not a photocopy; some counters ask for it on any amount.

Only use licensed counters

Never change money with anyone approaching you on the street or in a car park. Licensed counters display their Bank Negara Malaysia licence, and you can search the licensee list on the Bank Negara Malaysia website.

ATMs and cards

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in Selangor malls, hotels and chain restaurants. Bank ATMs give a fair rate, but your home bank may charge a foreign withdrawal fee. If a terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in ringgit. Keep some cash for hawker stalls and night markets.
