The Habitat Penang Hill is a rainforest discovery centre on the top of Penang Hill, a few minutes' walk from the funicular's upper station. A paved nature trail leads through old rainforest to two raised walkways: the Langur Way Canopy Walk, strung through the treetops, and the Curtis Crest Tree Top Walk, a circular platform that is the highest public viewpoint on Penang Island. Guides and signboards explain the plants and animals along the way, and on a clear day the views reach from George Town to the north coast.

This guide covers how The Habitat came about, what you will see, tickets and hours for 2026, current maintenance notices, how to get there and tips, checked in October 2026.

History of The Habitat Penang Hill

The forest on Penang Hill is often described as among the oldest rainforest in the world, with the forests of the Malay Peninsula estimated at around 130 million years old. The Habitat was developed after 2012 as a nature attraction to let visitors walk into this forest without damaging it. It was built in two phases. The first, with the nature trail and the Curtis Crest Tree Top Walk, opened around 2016 to 2017. The second phase, the Langur Way Canopy Walk, opened to the public in 2018.

The structures were designed to be tree friendly: walkways stand on their own supports rather than being bolted or cabled to the trees. Curtis Crest is named after Charles Curtis (1853 to 1928), the English botanist who was the first superintendent of the Penang Botanic Gardens in the valley below and who catalogued many of the island's wild plants.

In September 2021 the hill became the core of the UNESCO Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, which covers about 12,481 hectares of forest, coast and sea, and The Habitat now presents itself as a gateway to the reserve, with education programmes for schools and guided walks.

What to See at The Habitat Penang Hill

The nature trail

The main trail is about 1.5 km long, well marked, with a rope bridge and signboards on the trees, ferns and animals around you. Look out for pitcher plants, giant ferns, strangler figs and huge buttressed trees. Allow about one to two hours with stops.

Langur Way Canopy Walk

The canopy walk is a suspended walkway about 230 metres long, taking you through several levels of the forest from near the ground to the treetops. It is named after the dusky leaf monkey, or spectacled langur, a gentle grey monkey with white rings round its eyes that is often seen in this part of the hill. The walkway sways slightly as you cross it, and gives views out to the Penang coastline.

Curtis Crest Tree Top Walk

Curtis Crest is a ring-shaped platform about 100 metres around, raised about 13 metres above the ground on a ridge at roughly 820 metres above sea level, around 100 metres higher than the funicular's upper station. It gives a 360-degree view over the forest and across the island; on clear days you can see Muka Head on the north-west coast and the sea beyond. It is especially popular at sunset. Capacity is limited for safety, so you may have to wait at busy times.

Wildlife

Besides dusky leaf monkeys, you may see long-tailed macaques, squirrels, birds including hornbills, butterflies and, if you look closely, lizards and insects on the tree trunks. Animals are wild, so sightings are never guaranteed; mornings and late afternoons are usually best.

Activities and facilities

The Habitat runs guided nature walks, evening walks and forest-bathing sessions, and offers optional add-ons such as ziplines and an abseil, which carry extra fees. There is a cafe with forest views and a shop selling locally made crafts.
