Supermarkets in Kuala Lumpur: 13 Places for Groceries and Food Gifts
Supermarkets in Kuala Lumpur are almost all inside shopping malls, and most of the city's main hotel areas have one within a short walk or a single train stop. They are the easiest place to buy water, fruit and toiletries during your stay, and the cheapest place to buy Malaysian food gifts such as white coffee, tea, kaya and curry pastes. Shelf prices are fixed, so there is no bargaining.
This guide covers 13 supermarkets in Kuala Lumpur, grouped by area and starting with Bukit Bintang and KLCC. They range from budget stores (NSK Grocer, AEON BiG) to premium grocers (Mercato, Village Grocer, Jaya Grocer and Ben's Independent Grocer). Each entry has the address, opening hours, price level, pork and alcohol notes and a Google Maps link. All were checked in October 2026.

Bukit Bintang and TRX
Cold Storage Sungei Wang
Cold Storage is one of Malaysia's oldest supermarket chains, and this branch sits on the LB floor of Sungei Wang Plaza, right on the main Bukit Bintang shopping strip. It is the closest full supermarket for most hotels around Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Alor and Changkat, and the Bukit Bintang MRT and monorail stations are next to the mall.
It stocks everyday groceries, fresh fruit, bottled water in bulk, toiletries and a good range of Malaysian packaged food, so it works for both a quick top-up and souvenir shopping. Pork and alcohol are kept in a separate non-halal section. Cold Storage is now run by the same group as Mercato, and its website lists both brands together.
Jaya Grocer LaLaport BBCC
Jaya Grocer is a large Malaysian supermarket chain known for fresh produce, imported goods and a strong local food section. Its branch in LaLaport BBCC, the Japanese-run mall that opened in 2024 at Bukit Bintang City Centre, is one of the anchor stores and is a short walk from the Hang Tuah LRT and monorail interchange.
It is a good stop if you are staying on the Pudu or Hang Tuah side of Bukit Bintang. Look for Malaysian coffee and tea, kaya, sambal and curry pastes, and local biscuits. Like other Jaya Grocer stores it has a separate non-halal section for pork and alcohol. Jaya Grocer does not publish hours for this branch online, so check before a late visit.
Mercato The Exchange TRX
Mercato is the upmarket supermarket brand of the group that also runs Cold Storage. The TRX branch is on the Concourse Level of The Exchange TRX mall, which links directly to the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) MRT station, one stop from Bukit Bintang. It is also an easy walk from the eastern end of Jalan Bukit Bintang through the TRX City Park.
Expect a large imported range (cheese, wine, Japanese and Korean products) alongside Malaysian staples, a bakery and ready-to-eat food. Prices are higher than at the mid-range chains, but it is a calm place to shop and opens early at 8 am. Pork and alcohol are sold in a separate area.
KLCC, Jalan Ampang and Jalan Tun Razak
Cold Storage Suria KLCC
This Cold Storage is on the Concourse Level of Suria KLCC, the mall at the foot of the Petronas Twin Towers, near the KLCC LRT entrance. It opens at 7 am, three hours before most of the mall shops, which makes it useful for breakfast supplies or water before a day out.
The store carries a wide range of imported and Malaysian products and is a convenient place to buy coffee, tea and snacks to take home after visiting the towers or KLCC Park. It has a separate non-halal section for pork and alcohol.
Village Grocer Avenue K
Village Grocer is a Malaysian premium supermarket chain. Its Avenue K branch is on the Concourse Level of the mall opposite Suria KLCC, with a direct link to KLCC LRT station, so it is handy for the many serviced apartments and hotels along Jalan Ampang.
It is smaller than the Bangsar store but has the essentials: fresh fruit, bread, drinks, snacks and a shelf of Malaysian coffee, tea and condiments. It closes at 9 pm, earlier than most KL supermarkets. The phone number is 03-2181 8399.
Jaya Grocer The Intermark
The Intermark branch was Jaya Grocer's first store in Kuala Lumpur and is one of its largest, at around 30,000 square feet. The Intermark mall is next to Ampang Park LRT station and about 15 minutes' walk from the Twin Towers.
The wide aisles make it a comfortable place to browse Malaysian products: white coffee, BOH tea, kaya, curry and rendang pastes, local chocolate and durian-flavoured sweets. There is also a food court area inside the store for a quick meal. Pork and alcohol are in a separate non-halal section.
Ben's Independent Grocer (B.I.G.) The LINC KL
Ben's Independent Grocer, usually shortened to B.I.G., is a premium grocer known for organic produce, artisan bread, deli items and specialty imports. The LINC KL branch is in a small, quiet mall at the junction of Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Ampang, close to Ampang Park LRT station and a short walk from The Intermark.
It is the place for good coffee beans, cheese or wine rather than bargain snacks, but it also stocks some well-packaged Malaysian products that make tidy gifts. The phone number is 03-2181 6011.
City centre and Chow Kit
NSK Grocer Quill City Mall
NSK Grocer is the modern supermarket format of NSK Trade City, a Malaysian wholesale-style grocer known for low prices. The Quill City Mall branch opened in January 2022 and covers around 85,000 square feet on the lower ground floor, with fresh produce, live seafood, dry goods and a bulk-buy wholesale section. The mall is a few minutes' walk from Medan Tuanku monorail station.
This is the best-value large supermarket in the city centre for snacks, instant noodles, coffee sachets and spices to take home, and it is close to the hotels around Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. If you need a pork-free shop or want alcohol, check the store signage, as the layout differs from the premium chains.
Mercato Sunway Putra Mall
This Mercato is on the lower ground floor of Sunway Putra Mall, across the road from the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (formerly PWTC). PWTC LRT station is linked to the mall by a covered walkway, and it is the nearest large supermarket for the hotels around Jalan Putra and the Chow Kit area.
It opens at 8 am and carries a full grocery range, including imported products, Malaysian snacks and household items. There is a separate area for pork and alcohol.
Bangsar and Mid Valley
Village Grocer Bangsar Village
The Bangsar Village branch is Village Grocer's best-known store and a favourite with Bangsar residents and expats. It sits on the ground floor of Bangsar Village on Jalan Telawi, the main cafe and restaurant street in Bangsar Baru, about 15 minutes' walk or a short Grab ride from Bangsar LRT station.
It has a strong fresh food section, a bakery and a good choice of Malaysian products, from kaya and Penang white curry noodles to locally roasted coffee. Pork and alcohol are in a separate section. The phone number is 03-2282 0633.
AEON BiG Mid Valley
AEON BiG is the hypermarket brand of Japanese retailer AEON, and the Mid Valley store reopened in December 2023 after a refurbishment. It is one of two big grocery anchors in Mid Valley Megamall; the AEON department store in the same mall (Lot AT-3) also has its own supermarket, with the same 10 am to 10 pm hours.
Prices are lower than at the premium chains, which makes it a good place to stock up on multipacks of instant noodles, Milo, biscuits and coffee for friends at home. Mid Valley KTM Komuter station is next to the mall, and a covered walkway links it to The Gardens Mall. Non-halal products are sold in a separate section. Phone +603 2282 6899.
Further out: Cochrane and Mont Kiara
Village Grocer MyTOWN
This Village Grocer is on Basement 1 of MyTOWN Shopping Centre in Cochrane, next to IKEA Cheras and a short walk from Cochrane MRT station, three stops from Bukit Bintang on the Kajang line.
It is a useful option if you are combining a supermarket run with IKEA, or staying in the Cheras and Maluri apartments. The phone number is 03-9226 6176.
Cold Storage 1 Mont Kiara
Mont Kiara is a residential area popular with expats and long-stay visitors, and this Cold Storage on the lower ground floor of the 1 Mont Kiara mall is its main supermarket. There is no train station nearby, so most people come by car or Grab.
It carries the imported products that expat households look for alongside Malaysian staples, and has a separate non-halal section for pork and alcohol.
Tips for Shopping at Supermarkets in Kuala Lumpur
What to buy to take home
The Malaysian products aisle is the best-value souvenir shop in town. Good choices that travel well are 3-in-1 white coffee sachets (Ipoh white coffee brands such as OldTown and Aik Cheong), BOH tea from the Cameron Highlands, kaya in sealed jars, sambal, rendang and curry pastes, packet spice mixes, Penang white curry and other local instant noodles, Malaysian biscuits and chocolate, and durian-flavoured sweets such as dodol or durian chocolate. Fresh durian is not a good idea: most hotels and airlines ban it because of the smell.
Bringing food home
Check your home country's customs rules before you buy. Australia and New Zealand in particular restrict meat, eggs, dairy and some plant products, and many countries ban meat floss and other pork products. Pack jars and sauces in checked luggage, because liquids and pastes over 100 ml are not allowed in cabin bags. Some kaya needs refrigeration, so buy shelf-stable jars and check the label.
Paying, bags and tax
Cards (including contactless), DuitNow QR and e-wallets such as Touch 'n Go eWallet are accepted at the supermarkets in this guide. Plastic bags are not free in Kuala Lumpur, so bring a foldable bag or buy a reusable one at the till. Shelf prices already include any sales and service tax (SST): basic groceries are exempt, while since July 2025 some imported and non-essential food items carry a 5 to 10 per cent sales tax, which is part of why imported goods cost more at the premium chains.
Pork, alcohol and halal food
Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country, and at the mid-range and premium chains pork and alcohol are kept in a separate non-halal section, often with its own cashier. Pay for those items at that counter. Mydin, a large Malaysian chain, is a fully halal store and does not sell pork or alcohol. Convenience stores in Kuala Lumpur are not allowed to sell hard liquor, so supermarkets are the main place to buy wine and spirits outside bars.
Convenience stores and other chains
For late-night water and snacks, 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, KK Super Mart and myNEWS have branches on almost every busy street, and many are open 24 hours. 99 Speedmart is a budget mini-market chain found in residential areas, useful for cheap drinks and snacks if you are staying in an apartment. Lotus's (formerly Tesco) and Giant hypermarkets are mostly in the suburbs and are only worth the trip if you have a car.
