KL Bird Park
Last updated: October 2026
KL Bird Park (Taman Burung Kuala Lumpur) is a huge walk-in aviary in the Lake Gardens, the green district on the western edge of central Kuala Lumpur. Under a net canopy stretched over about 8.5 hectares (20.9 acres) of landscaped valley, more than 3,000 birds of around 200 species live in a mix of free-flight areas and enclosures, so hornbills, egrets, storks and peacocks wander and fly around visitors rather than sitting behind glass. The park describes itself as the world's largest free-flight walk-in aviary, and it is one of the most popular family attractions in the city.
This guide covers the park's history, what to see in each zone, the daily show and feeding times, 2026 ticket prices, directions and tips.

History of KL Bird Park
The bird park was planned in 1987 as part of the development of the Lake Gardens (now Perdana Botanical Gardens), Kuala Lumpur's oldest public park, and construction started the following year. It opened on 15 November 1991, a year before the neighbouring KL Butterfly Park. The idea was to keep birds in conditions as close as possible to their natural habitat: instead of rows of small cages, a large netted canopy covers a valley of trees, streams and ponds, and many species breed naturally inside it.
The early years drew some criticism over upkeep, but by around 2000 the park was widely described as landscaped, clean and shady, and it has since become a fixture of KL sightseeing tours. It now receives in the region of 200,000 visitors a year. Roughly 90 per cent of the birds are local species, with the rest coming from Australia, China, the Netherlands, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania and Thailand.
What to See at KL Bird Park: the Four Zones
Zones 1 and 2: the free-flight aviary
The first two zones form the main free-flight aviary under the big net. Paths wind past waterfalls and ponds, with birds flying overhead and wading in the water. Look for the Baya weaver and its hanging woven nests, the Nicobar pigeon (the closest living relative of the extinct dodo), ostriches, scarlet ibis, cattle egrets, pelicans and peafowl that stroll the paths. Other species you may spot include the grey crowned crane, sacred ibis, violet turaco, barn owl and white-headed munia.
Zone 3: Hornbill Park
This section is devoted to hornbills, the large-billed birds that are a symbol of Malaysia, particularly Sarawak. The rhinoceros hornbill, with its upturned red and yellow casque, is the star, alongside other hornbill species. The hornbill feeding session at 11:30 am is the best time to see them up close.
Zone 4: World of Parrots and the amphitheatre
Zone 4 has a walk-in mini aviary with around 20 species of parrot, including lories, cockatoos, macaws and parakeets, where you can feed and photograph the birds. The amphitheatre for the daily bird show is also here.

How to Get to KL Bird Park
- MRT: Muzium Negara station (Kajang Line) is the nearest, about 20 minutes on foot uphill through the Lake Gardens, past the National Museum and the Islamic Arts Museum. A short Grab ride from the station is easier in the heat.
- From KL Sentral or the city centre: the park is about 10 minutes by car from central Kuala Lumpur; Grab is cheap and drops you at the main gate on Jalan Cenderawasih.
- Hop-on hop-off bus: the KL Hop-On Hop-Off city tour bus stops at the bird park.
- Driving: there is a car park outside the main entrance.
- On foot from the Islamic Arts Museum or National Mosque: a short walk uphill through the gardens.
Tips for Visiting
- Arrive at opening time. The birds are most active in the cooler morning, and you can catch the 10:30 am and 11:30 am feeding sessions and the 12:30 pm show in one go.
- Outside food is not allowed, but you may bring your own water bottle or tumbler. There is a cafe and restaurant inside.
- Some birds, especially peafowl, walk right up to people. Keep snacks out of sight and do not try to touch free-flying birds.
- Wear light clothing and comfortable shoes: the park is on a slope and it gets hot and humid under the net.
- Combine the visit with Perdana Botanical Gardens next door, the Islamic Arts Museum, the National Mosque and the National Planetarium, all within a short walk or ride.
