Night Markets in Johor Bahru: Pasar Karat and 10 Weekly and Seasonal Markets
Night markets in Johor Bahru are mostly weekly pasar malam: rows of stalls that set up on a housing-estate street one evening a week and sell street food, fruit, clothes and household goods. Johor Bahru (JB) also has one nightly market in the city centre, Pasar Karat, which the city council moved to a car park beside Galleria @ Kotaraya in November 2025.
This guide covers 11 night markets and bazaars, checked in October 2026 against the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) website and food and travel guides published in 2025 and 2026. Pasar malam keep regular days but their exact hours are not officially published, so treat times as a guide. Prices are in Malaysian Ringgit (RM).

Pasar Karat: the nightly night market in Johor Bahru city centre
Pasar Karat (Bazar JB)
Pasar Karat, run by the city council as Bazar JB, is the night market closest to the Causeway and the only one in Johor Bahru that opens every night. For years it filled the streets around Jalan Segget. The Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) moved the traders to the Jalan Duke car park beside Galleria @ Kotaraya from 25 November 2025, open every day from 7 pm to midnight. A March 2026 guide says a further move to Jalan Syed Mohamed Mufti is planned as part of the city-centre upgrade; we could not confirm whether that has happened, so check the MBJB website or ask locally.
It is as much a shopping market as a food one: clothes, thrift finds, shoes (one stall sold 3 pairs for RM30) and phone accessories, plus snacks. Guides recommend the Lokching grilled sausage stall (RM13 for five), mi siput, a fried cracker from Muar served with sweet sambal (RM3), lime and plum juice (RM3) and snow cheesecake (RM10). A 2025 visit found that most stalls only get going from about 8.30 pm. The site is about 10 minutes' walk from JB Sentral.
Weekly pasar malam in Johor Bahru
These run once a week on a fixed day, usually from about 5 pm until 9 or 10 pm. They are in residential areas 3 to 10 km from the city centre, so take Grab or a car.
KSL Monday Night Market
The Monday night market on Jalan Seladang, once called the Century Garden Monday night market, is about four minutes' walk from KSL City Mall, so it is the easiest weekly pasar malam to reach from the hotels around Taman Abad. A March 2026 guide lists otak-otak, kuih, cucur udang (prawn fritters) and Sarawak kolo mee from RM2, plus a stall selling salted egg squid, mushrooms and broccoli.
The city council's mobile licence counter visited the Jalan Seladang market on a Monday evening in December 2024, which confirms the day. The guide says popular food sells out in the first hour, so arrive around 5 pm.
Pasar Malam Kampung Melayu Majidee
The Monday market in Kampung Melayu Majidee, a Malay village area north of the city centre, is known for Malay snacks. A March 2026 guide singles out Popia S.S. Ali, which sells fried and fresh popiah (spring rolls with fried shallots and chilli sauce) at RM8 for five, along with putu bambu, takoyaki, char kuey teow and fried rice.
The city council's licence counter visited the market on Jalan Sekolah, Kampung Melayu, on a Monday evening in December 2024. Exact hours are not published, so go from about 5 pm. Most traders are Malay, but check the sign at each stall.
Johor Jaya Night Food Street
Johor Jaya, in the eastern suburbs, has a night food street with seats and tables, more like an open-air hawker centre than a market. A March 2026 guide lists stingray, sambal lala (clams), chicken wings, oyster omelette and satay, plus bak kut teh and watercress pork rib soup, on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations, from 5 pm to midnight on Monday to Wednesday.
Separately, the weekly Johor Jaya pasar malam sets up on Jalan Dedap 13 on Tuesday evenings: the city council's licence counter visited it on a Tuesday in December 2024. Johor Jaya is about 10 km north-east of the city centre, so go by car or Grab.
Taman Tampoi Utama Night Market
The Tuesday market in Taman Tampoi Utama stands out for Kelantanese food, according to a March 2026 guide: nasi kerabu (blue rice with fried chicken) and laksam (rolled rice noodles in fish gravy), along with putu piring, kue putu, cut fruit with asam powder, grilled corn and rojak petis.
Clothes, toys and household goods are sold as well. The guide advises bringing cash, as most stalls do not take QR payments. Tampoi is about 9 km north-west of the city centre.
Pasar Malam Taman Dahlia
The Wednesday market on Persiaran Dahlia is known for its many nasi dagang and nasi kukus stalls, rice dishes served with your choice of fried chicken, fish curry or mutton, according to a March 2026 guide. It also has a large fruit section (dragon fruit, starfruit, mangosteen) and fresh juices such as watermelon.
The city council's licence counter visited this market on a Wednesday evening in November 2024. It is in the Tampoi area, about 9 km north-west of the city centre.
Permas Sunday Night Market
The Sunday market on Jalan Permas 11, about three minutes' walk from the Renaissance hotel in Permas Jaya, is known for Taiwanese-style food, according to a March 2026 guide: oyster mee sua (thin wheat noodles in a thick soup), candied hawthorn sticks, muah chee (peanut-coated mochi, RM5 a pack) and coloured steamed buns with fillings such as black sesame (RM8 for six).
The city council's licence counter visited the Jalan Permas 11 market on a Sunday evening in December 2024. It gets busy from 5 pm. Permas Jaya is about 7 km north-east of the city centre.
Night markets in Skudai and Iskandar Puteri
These are in the north-western suburbs, 12 to 15 km from the city centre, and are useful if you are staying near Bukit Indah, Mount Austin or Legoland.
Impian Emas Thursday Night Market
A March 2026 guide calls the Thursday market in Taman Impian Emas the biggest pasar malam in Johor Bahru. Food stalls sell mochi, chicken chop and colourful Nyonya kuih, and a stall called Anak Cucu Adam makes min jiang kueh (folded peanut pancakes) with fillings such as egg and chocolate.
There are also stalls selling clothes and slippers at low prices. Most traders are Chinese, so check halal signs. Impian Emas is in Skudai, about 13 km north-west of the city centre.
Bukit Indah 2 Wednesday Night Market
The Wednesday market in Bukit Indah 2 has more dinner food than most, according to a March 2026 guide: ayam goreng kunyit (turmeric fried chicken, RM4.50), curry chee cheong fun and whole roast ducks chopped to order, plus pork sausages, prawn crackers, salted egg fish skin, chocolate apam balik and fresh coconut drinks.
Photos from 2023 show otak-otak grilled over charcoal in leaf wrappers and trays of kuih and curry puffs. It is in Iskandar Puteri, about 12 km west of the city centre; one reviewer suggests arriving between 4 and 5 pm and leaving before the 7 pm crowd.
Taman Ungku Tun Aminah Saturday Night Market
The Saturday market in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah (TUTA) is one of the largest in Johor Bahru, according to a March 2026 guide. It lists grilled and fried skewers, Penang laksa, fried carrot cake (RM6), rojak, fruit and cream cheese mochi, soya bean milk (RM2.80) and brightly coloured juices.
There is seating nearby for a full dinner, as well as fruit, vegetables, clothes, toys and household goods. Parking is hard once it fills up, so come early. TUTA is in Skudai, about 14 km north-west of the city centre.
Ramadan bazaar
During Ramadan, bazaars open across the city in the afternoon so that people can buy food to break the fast. This is the largest one we could confirm in 2026.
Bazaar Ramadan Plaza Angsana
During Ramadan, the car park of Angsana Johor Bahru Mall becomes what a February 2026 guide calls the biggest Ramadan bazaar in Johor, with hundreds of stalls open daily from 12 pm to 8 pm in 2026. Food ranges from lemang and kuih lopes (glutinous rice with palm sugar, RM10 for four) to rendang, laksa (RM13), nasi lemak kukus (RM3), Ramly burgers (RM7) and durian fritters.
A covered section sells Hari Raya biscuits, pineapple tarts and cordials. Ramadan in 2027 is expected to run from about early February to early March, so check dates nearer the time. Bus J30 from JB Sentral stops opposite the mall; car park entry is RM2.50.

Markets we did not list
Older guides mention weekly markets in Taman Pelangi (Jalan Perang), Taman Daya and Taman Sentosa, and the city council's mobile licence counter visited the Taman Pelangi and Taman Daya markets in late 2024. We could not find a current day and time for them, or for a Tebrau night market, from a source we could read, so they are not listed. Ask your hotel which market is on that evening.
何时去
Weekly markets are busiest from about 6 pm, and popular food sells out early, so arrive around 5 pm. Pasar Karat is the exception: stalls there get going later in the evening. Light rain does not stop most markets, but heavy storms can close stalls early.
Paying and halal food
Carry RM5 and RM10 notes. Some traders show a DuitNow QR code, but few take foreign cards. Most markets have a mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian traders, so look for a halal sign or ask; Ramadan bazaars are mostly halal. For sit-down hawker meals before or after, see our Johor Bahru hawker food guide.
