Lawn, pond, wooden bridge and paved path under trees in DR Seenivasagam Park, Ipoh

DR Seenivasagam Park (Taman DR Seenivasagam) is the main city park in Ipoh. It opened in the early 1950s as Coronation Park, to mark the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and was later renamed after a local politician. The grounds have a lake crossed by a three-pronged concrete bridge, a giant bamboo thicket, a children's playground, bicycle hire and football pitches.

The Japanese Garden opened in 1995 and was designed with help from Fukuoka City Hall, Fukuoka being Ipoh's sister city since 1989. It has an island lake, a red bridge, a tea-house style pavilion and a lotus pond. Paths are flat, so the park suits children and older visitors; go early or late in the day to avoid the heat. The Kinta Riverfront Walk runs along the western edge.

Kinta Riverfront Walk

The Kinta Riverfront Walk is a landscaped walkway along the Kinta River on the western side of DR Seenivasagam Park, laid out around 2010 to 2013. It has LED-lit artificial trees, which are the reason many people come in the evening, and the Love Bridge, a pedestrian crossing that opened on Valentine's Day 2013.

The Palong Tin Museum is on the walk and shows historical tin-mining equipment. It is a short, flat stroll rather than a hike, so combine it with the park next door. We could not confirm opening times for the museum, so check before you plan around it.

Hill Trails and Day Trips from Ipoh

These need more planning: a hill range with several trail access points, a rafting river 20 km south, and the cool highlands about two hours east.

Gunung Kledang seen from Ipoh, a forested hill with radio masts on its summit

Bukit Kledang is part of the Kledang range, a 38 km line of hills that runs along the western edge of Ipoh and dominates the city skyline. Several walking routes of different difficulty climb the hill, with views over limestone outcrops and the Kinta Valley, and wildlife can be seen on the way.

The Kledang Saiong Forest Reserve, set up in 1952, is a strict nature reserve within the range with endemic plants and animals such as primates, wild pigs, civets and yellow-throated martens. Stay on established trails. We could not confirm a single official trailhead, fees or facilities, so check recent hiker reports before you go, start at dawn, bring water and tell someone your route.

Visiting Ipoh Nature and Outdoors: Practical Tips

Go early. Ipoh is hot and humid by late morning. Walk the parks before 10 am or after 5 pm, and start hill trails at dawn.

Rain. Afternoon storms are common. Avoid rafting rivers and slippery trails after heavy rain, and check the forecast for Cameron Highlands, where mist and rain are frequent.

Getting around. The two city walks are close together in central Ipoh. Bukit Kledang, Gopeng and Cameron Highlands all need a car or a Grab, and taxis to Cameron Highlands are a long fare.

Hours and fees. Many of these places are open-air with no posted opening times. Where we could not confirm a fee or hours, the entry says so. Check before a long drive.
