Johor Bahru Attractions: 12 Theme Parks, Museums and Sights

Johor Bahru attractions: the brick-built entrance arch of LEGOLAND Malaysia in Iskandar Puteri under a blue sky

Johor Bahru attractions split into two areas: the old city centre of Johor Bahru (JB), a short walk from the Causeway to Singapore, and the newer Iskandar Puteri district about 25 km west, where LEGOLAND Malaysia and SEA LIFE stand. This guide covers 12 places checked for October 2026: three LEGOLAND resort parks, the state zoo, a prison turned arts hub, the Chinese heritage quarter, the city square, two waterfront and water parks, and two day trips to Desaru and Kukup.

The Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque, the Old Chinese Temple, the Glass Temple and the city churches are in the Johor Bahru temples guide. The Royal Abu Bakar Museum in the Istana Besar is left out because it has been closed to the public since 2012.

The entrance arch of LEGOLAND Malaysia, built to look like giant LEGO bricks, with the ticket gates behind

LEGOLAND Malaysia opened in 2012 as the first LEGOLAND park in Asia, with more than 40 rides, shows and attractions in themed areas built around LEGO bricks. The resort also has a water park, the SEA LIFE aquarium and the LEGOLAND Hotel, and it is best suited to families with younger children.

Prices on the official site are walk-up rates; dated online tickets are cheaper, and the park sells evening tickets for special events such as Brick-or-Treat at Halloween. Bring sun protection, as much of the park is open to the sky.

The blue wave-shaped arch over the entrance to the LEGOLAND Water Park in Malaysia, with LEGO figures on brick towers

The LEGO-themed water park opened in 2013 beside the theme park, with its own rides and slides and separate tickets. It is the easiest way to cool down on a hot day at the resort, and it closes earlier than the theme park on event nights.

A 2-park ticket covers the theme park and water park on the same day. The official site also lists a discounted water park deal for Malaysian residents, so check the offers page before you buy.

The blue outer wall of SEA LIFE Malaysia painted with sharks, fish and coral, next to the LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort

SEA LIFE Malaysia is an indoor aquarium within the LEGOLAND resort, with habitats, feeding talks and an underwater dining experience listed on the official site. It is a good rain or midday-heat option, and it can be added to a theme park day with a 3-park ticket.

A visit takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Check the feeding and talk times on the day if you want to time your visit around them.

The new timber-clad entrance building of Zoo Johor with its cartoon logo and visitors queuing at the ticket counter

Opened in 1928 next to the Istana Besar, Johor Zoo is the oldest zoo in Malaysia. It reopened on 31 August 2024 after an upgrade and keeps around 65 species, including tigers, Malayan tapirs, sambar deer, gibbons and saltwater crocodiles. Two zoo-born tigers are the mascots of Visit Johor Year 2026.

Buy tickets online at zootiket.johor.gov.my or at the counter, which closes at 5 pm. The zoo website describes a free shuttle bus from the car park at the old Ayer Molek prison. Office phone: 07-223 0404.

The yellow two-storey gatehouse of the old Penjara Johor Bahru, photographed in 2007 while it was still prison property

Johor Bahru Prison was built in 1883, one of the oldest prisons in Malaysia, and stopped holding inmates in 2005. It has reopened as Kota Jail, which calls itself a playground for art, heritage and culture, with the Johor Bahru City Council and the Malaysian Prison Department as partners.

Expect galleries, events and creative spaces inside the old walls rather than a formal museum, so check its Instagram (@kotajail) for what is on. It is a few minutes from Johor Zoo, so the two combine well.

The white four-storey shophouse of the Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum on Jalan Ibrahim, with red lanterns in a tree outside

This small museum fills a four-storey shophouse in the old town and tells the story of the Chinese community in Johor, from the gambier and pepper planters encouraged by the Sultan in the 19th century to the trades and clan associations of the city. Exhibits include documents, photos, musical instruments, old money and porcelain.

We could not confirm current hours or the entry fee from an official page, so check before you go. It sits at the end of the Tan Hiok Nee heritage walk and near the Old Chinese Temple.

Jalan Tan Hiok Nee in Johor Bahru with restored white and yellow shophouses, palm trees and red lanterns strung over the street

Jalan Tan Hiok Nee is named after the leader of the Ngee Heng Kongsi who helped found the Chinese settlement in 19th-century Johor Bahru. With neighbouring Jalan Dhoby it forms the old-buildings trail, a grid of restored shophouses with Chinese and Indian businesses, cafes, old coffee shops and street art.

It is the easiest walk in the city: start at the Chinese Heritage Museum on Jalan Ibrahim, wander Tan Hiok Nee and Dhoby streets, and finish at the Old Chinese Temple on Jalan Trus. Go in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.

Dataran Bandaraya Johor Bahru

The city square was completed on 1 January 1994, the day Johor Bahru was declared a city. Its 51-metre clock tower was designed to echo the Sultan Ibrahim Building and the Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque, and the large field is used for official events, parades and festivals.

There is little to do here by day beyond a photo, but it is close to the state mosque and Johor Zoo, and the lit clock tower is part of the Johor Bahru night view guide.

Danga Bay is the largest recreational park in Johor Bahru, a long stretch of waterfront facing the Strait of Johor. Locals come for walks along the palm-lined promenade, the sunset views and the seafood restaurants in the area.

Much of the area has been rebuilt with high-rise housing, and older guides list rides that we could not confirm are still running, so treat it as a place to walk and watch the sunset. A sign on the promenade warns against swimming.

This family park in the Mount Austin area combines a water park with an adventure park. Its official site lists a ropes and obstacle course (Monkey Business), a tropical "ice-skating" rink, drift karts (Drift In Austin) and a trampoline zone (Jump Street).

The official site was online in October 2026 but did not show hours or prices when we checked, so confirm both before you travel. It is about 25 minutes by car north-east of the city centre.

The Adventure Waterpark is the main family attraction of the Desaru Coast resort area on the east coast of Johor. The resort describes it as home to the first water coaster in the region and one of the biggest wave pools in the world, with more than 20 wet and dry rides.

Desaru Coast also has beaches, resort hotels, golf and an ATV ride at Desaru Fruit Farm, so most visitors make a full day or an overnight trip of it. Beaches are covered in the Johor Bahru beaches and islands guide.

Wooden and concrete houses on stilts over the water at Kukup Laut fishing village, with mangrove forest across the channel

Kukup is a small fishing village in Pontian district, near the southern tip of mainland Asia. It is known for its houses and open-air seafood restaurants built on stilts over the water, and for the fish farms in the channel facing the mangrove island of Pulau Kukup.

Most visitors come for a seafood lunch and a walk along the boardwalks. Regular ferries also run from Kukup to Tanjung Balai Karimun in Indonesia. Tanjung Piai, the southernmost point of mainland Asia, is a short drive away.

Planning Your Day Among Johor Bahru Attractions

Keep the city centre and Iskandar Puteri on separate days. In the centre, Johor Zoo, Kota Jail, Dataran Bandaraya and the state mosque are close together on the west side, and the heritage quarter around Tan Hiok Nee Street is a short ride or a 20-minute walk east.

LEGOLAND, its water park and SEA LIFE fill a full day in Iskandar Puteri; arrive at opening time and leave the aquarium for the hottest part of the afternoon. Desaru Coast and Kukup are each a full day out by car.

Weekends and Singapore school holidays bring heavy traffic at the Causeway and the Second Link, and full car parks at LEGOLAND. Visit on a weekday if you can, and avoid Tuesday for the zoo.
