Selangor Nature and Outdoors: 11 Forest Parks, Hikes and Gardens

Hiker on the rocky Bukit Tabur ridge in Gombak at sunset, one of the nature and outdoors spots in Selangor covered in this guide

Nature and outdoors in Selangor means more than the Klang Valley sprawl suggests. The state wraps around Kuala Lumpur and reaches the forested Main Range to the north-east, a quartz ridge above the Klang Gates reservoir, grassy hills near Semenyih, mangroves at the Selangor river mouth and flat paddy fields on the northern coast.

This guide covers 11 places in Selangor state, outside the Kuala Lumpur city limits: five forest parks and waterfalls, two hill hikes and four gardens, wetlands and rural sights. Each entry names the town it is in and lists hours, fees and permits, checked in October 2026 where an official or recent source was available. For parks inside the city itself, see our guide to nature and outdoors in Kuala Lumpur; for the coast, see beaches in Selangor.

Looking up at tall rainforest trees with gaps between their crowns at FRIM, Kepong, Selangor

In Kepong. FRIM is a government forestry research campus on the northern edge of the city, set in lowland forest that was replanted from the 1920s onwards. Visitors walk the shaded campus roads and the Kepong Botanic Gardens area, and the Forest Skywalk lifts you onto a tower and walkway at canopy height, with the forest below and the city skyline in the haze.

The area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in July 2025, and the protected core of the forest is now entered on pre-booked guided tours only, with a daily cap. The skywalk is booked online at skywalk.frim.gov.my and closes in bad weather, so phone +603 6279 7000 before you set out. There is no rail station at the gate: drive or take a Grab.

步行者走过八打灵再也 Bukit Gasing 草地空地上方的吊桥

In Petaling Jaya. Bukit Gasing is a forest reserve of roughly 100 hectares on the Petaling Jaya side of the border with Kuala Lumpur, with loops of about 2.7 to 4.3 km that gain 200 to 240 metres. Most walkers finish in one to two hours. It is a workout hill for Petaling Jaya residents more than a sightseeing stop, so expect joggers and exercise groups from early morning.

Day hiking is free and needs no permit. The suspension bridge was reported inaccessible from July 2025, so check its status before you count on it. Macaques gather near the temple and the telecom tower, so keep food zipped away. Parking at the main entrance is tight at weekends and the council does issue summonses for roadside parking: arrive early on a weekday or take a Grab.

Templer Forest Eco Park

Taman Rimba Templer, Templer Park, Rawang, Selangor (about 21 km from Kuala Lumpur) · Check hours before visiting · Small entry fee (check at the gate)River pools · Forest trails · Google Maps · Verified Oct 2026

In Rawang. Templer Park is a hill-forest reserve of about 1,200 hectares set aside as a wildlife sanctuary in the 1950s, and the eco park inside it is run by the Selangor Forestry Department. The draw is dipterocarp forest, rocky streams, waterfalls at several points and natural pools where families paddle on weekends. Trails range from short riverside strolls to steeper climbs.

An older Tourism Selangor listing gives daytime opening and a very low entry fee, but we found no current schedule, so confirm on the day or ring the forestry office on +603 5544 7507. It is usually quiet on weekdays and busy on Sundays. River levels rise fast after rain in the hills, so leave the water if the sky darkens upstream.

Visitors standing in the pool below a tier of Kanching Falls in the rainforest near Rawang, Selangor

In Rawang. Kanching Falls is a run of seven waterfall tiers inside the Taman Eko Rimba Kanching forest park, a short drive south of Rawang. Concrete paths and steps climb past the lower tiers, which have gazebos, picnic spots and shallow pools; the higher tiers are rougher and need proper shoes. It is the easiest waterfall to reach from the city, so weekends are crowded.

The park opens daily from 8 am to 5 pm. Entry is RM10 for non-Malaysians on weekdays and RM12 at weekends and public holidays, with RM4 and RM5 for Malaysians and RM5 per car. The river rises quickly when it rains upstream, so get out of the water at the first sign of rain. Long-tailed macaques roam the picnic areas, so keep bags closed. Allow about 40 minutes from the city by car.

Sungai Tua Eco Forest Park

Hutan Lipur Sungai Tua, about 10 km from Bandar Baru Selayang, Hulu Gombak, Selangor · Check hours before visiting · Small entry fee (check at the gate)River pools · Camping · Google Maps · Verified Oct 2026

In Hulu Gombak. Sungai Tua is a forest recreation area in the Hulu Gombak hills, reached from Jalan Kuching near Batu Caves along the road to the Selangor State Park entrance. It has a river with swimming spots, gazebos and barbecue areas, a camping ground and a suspension bridge, and it is mostly used by Klang Valley families for picnics.

An older Tourism Selangor listing gives daytime opening and a token entry fee; we found no current schedule, so check before you go. The park is managed by the Selangor Forestry Department (+603 5544 7507). Facilities are basic, so bring your own food and water. The access road is narrow and can be slow at weekends, and the river is dangerous after heavy rain in the hills.

Hill Hikes in Gombak and Semenyih

Two ridge hikes with open views. Both need an early start and a Selangor forestry permit, and one of them is for experienced hikers only.

Bukit Tabur

West trailhead, Taman Melawati, Gombak, Selangor · Daylight hikes only; permit required · Permit RM5 per person via SeForest e-Permit; registered guide requiredExperienced hikers only · Permit · Google Maps · Verified Oct 2026

Hiker on the rocky Bukit Tabur ridge watching the sun set over the forested Klang Gates reservoir in Gombak, Selangor

In Gombak. Bukit Tabur is a narrow quartz ridge above the Klang Gates reservoir, about 30 minutes from the city. The views at sunrise and sunset over the reservoir and forested hills are some of the best in the Klang Valley, but the route has scrambling on all fours, rope sections and steep drops on both sides, and there have been fatal falls. It is not a beginner hike.

Since 1 April 2025 every hiker needs a permit applied for online through the Selangor Forestry Department's SeForest e-Permit system at least 48 hours ahead. The fee is RM5 per person and a registered guide is compulsory; hiking without a permit can bring a fine of up to RM30,000. The west trail takes about 3 to 6 hours return, the east trail about 1.5 to 2 hours to the top. Start at dawn and stay off the ridge in wet weather.

Broga Hill

836 Jalan Broga, 43500 Semenyih, Selangor (about 40 km south-east of Kuala Lumpur) · Open access; check trail status before visiting (most visitors start before sunrise) · Free via the council (MPKJ) trail; RM5 entry plus RM5 parking on the private estate trailSunrise hike · Free permit · Google Maps · Verified Oct 2026

Line of hikers walking up the grassy ridge of Broga Hill with rocks and forest below, Semenyih, Selangor

In Semenyih. Broga Hill is a grassy hill of roughly 400 metres near Semenyih with three peaks in a row along an open ridge, and it is the standard sunrise hike for the Klang Valley. The first peaks take 30 to 45 minutes for a fit walker and up to 90 minutes for a beginner; the third peak needs a little scrambling with ropes. Aim to be at the car park by 5 to 5:30 am to catch sunrise at about 7 am.

There are two entrances. The council trail and car park are free, about 500 metres further along the road, while the private estate trail charges RM5 entry and RM5 parking. A free Selangor forestry permit is also required through forestry.selangor.gov.my. There is no shade on the ridge, so come down before mid-morning. It is about an hour by car from the city in light traffic.

Gardens, Wetlands and Paddy Fields

Easier, flatter options in Shah Alam and on the northern Selangor coast, good for families, bird watching and slow mornings.

Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam

Seksyen 7, Shah Alam, Selangor · Check hours before visiting (usually closed Mondays) · Check fees before visitingGardens · Family-friendly · Google Maps · Verified Oct 2026

In Shah Alam. The National Botanical Gardens is a very large park, about 800 hectares, on the edge of Shah Alam run by the Ministry of Agriculture. It holds themed gardens (ornamental, spice, herbs, tropical fruit and cactus), a small animal park, two reservoirs, a mystery tunnel and a replica village of traditional houses. The grounds are far too big to walk in one go, so use the shuttle bus or a bicycle.

Entry and parking fees are low, but we could not confirm the current rates or opening times from a recent source. Older listings show Monday closing outside public and school holidays and a mid-afternoon closing time, so go in the morning. Call +603 5510 6922 to confirm. Bring water and a hat; shade is patchy between the garden zones.

Bukit Jelutong Eco Community Park

Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam, Selangor · Daily 6:45 am – 7 pm · FreeLake · Jogging paths · Google Maps · Verified Oct 2026

In Shah Alam. This is a neighbourhood park in the Bukit Jelutong township with a lake, jogging paths, short hiking trails, picnic areas and a small petting zoo. Tourism Selangor named it among free attractions in the state in August 2026. It suits a relaxed family morning rather than a full day out.

The park is listed as open from 6:45 am to 7 pm daily, and there is a café on site. It is busiest at dawn and at sundown with local walkers, and quiet in the middle of the day. Parking is free in the surrounding lots, but street parking in the housing area is limited at weekends.

Kuala Selangor Nature Park

Jalan Klinik, Taman Alam, Kuala Selangor, Selangor · Check hours before visiting · Check fees before visitingBird watching · Mangrove walk · Google Maps · Verified Oct 2026

Taman Alam Kuala Selangor entrance gate with its name sign over the access road, Kuala Selangor Nature Park

In Kuala Selangor. Kuala Selangor Nature Park is a small reserve at the Selangor river mouth, run by the Malaysian Nature Society since 1987. It combines secondary forest, a brackish lake ringed by a coastal bund and a mangrove walkway, with watch towers for bird spotting. Around 100 resident bird species have been recorded, and migratory waders arrive between about September and April.

Older listings give daytime opening and a small entry fee, but we could not confirm current hours or prices, so call before you go. The Nature Society runs simple chalets and camping on site (+603 3289 2294). Silvered leaf monkeys and macaques are common. Mosquitoes are, too, so bring repellent and long sleeves. Combine it with Bukit Melawati and the fireflies for a Kuala Selangor day trip.

Sekinchan Paddy Fields

Paddy fields around Sekinchan town, Sabak Bernam, Selangor (Federal Route 5) · Open access; check the planting and harvest season before going · Free to view from public roads; some farms charge for toursScenery · Best at harvest · Google Maps · Verified Oct 2026

In Sekinchan. Sekinchan is one of Malaysia's main rice-growing districts, and the flat paddy fields around the town are the reason to come: at harvest they turn gold, and in the weeks after planting they are bright green and mirror the sky. Narrow farm roads run through the fields, so it is a drive-and-stop sightseeing trip rather than a trail.

Looks change a great deal between planting, growing and harvest, so ask locally or check recent photos before you pick a date. A few farms and rice mills in the area sell rice and offer short visits, usually for a small fee; hours and prices vary, so confirm with the operator. Pair it with seafood in the fishing village and Redang Beach on the way back. It is roughly 1 hour 30 minutes from the city.

Visiting Nature and Outdoors in Selangor: Practical Tips

早点出发

Start hikes between 6 and 8 am. By late morning it is hot and humid on exposed ridges such as Broga Hill and Bukit Tabur, and forest trails get dark well before the evening sunset.

下雨和雷暴

Afternoon thunderstorms are common, especially in the inter-monsoon months. Leave rivers, pools and waterfalls as soon as it rains upstream, avoid exposed ridges in lightning, and expect the FRIM skywalk to close in bad weather.

Permits for forest hikes

Since April 2025, hikes in Selangor forest reserves such as Bukit Tabur and Broga Hill need a permit from the SeForest e-Permit system at forestry.selangor.gov.my. Bukit Tabur costs RM5 and needs a registered guide; the Broga Hill permit is free. Apply at least 48 hours ahead.

猴子

Long-tailed macaques live at Bukit Gasing, Kanching, Kuala Selangor and Bukit Melawati. Keep food out of sight, do not feed them and zip up your bag.

交通

Most of these places are easiest by car or Grab. FRIM, Bukit Gasing and Shah Alam have bus and rail links to some degree, but the last stretch usually needs a ride. Check that a return Grab is available before heading deep into Hulu Gombak or Rawang.
