White On White is a Malaysian florist brand with a walk-in outlet on Jalan Dato Keramat, a few minutes from Komtar. The shop welcomes walk-ins and self-collection, which helps if you want to see the flowers before you pay or need something within the hour.

Its Penang page lists delivery to Gleneagles Penang, Island Hospital, Loh Guan Lye and Penang General Hospital, so it is a practical choice for get-well flowers. Expect modern hand-tied bouquets and flower boxes rather than traditional stands.

Pinetree Florist

Pinetree Florist was founded in 1992 by Ling, a fine-arts graduate, and trades from a shop on Jalan Anson on the western edge of central George Town. It is one of the more established independent names on the island.

The range covers birthday and anniversary bouquets, bridal bouquets, condolence arrangements, gift hampers, artificial flowers and festival pieces. The published delivery chart is unusually clear: George Town drops cost RM10, while the far north-west and the mainland cost more.

Ohara Florist

Ohara Florist sits on a quiet lane off Jalan Burmah in Pulau Tikus and delivers with its own in-house carrier rather than a courier. Its online shop is one of the broadest in Penang, with box arrangements, hand bouquets, vases, plants, fruit baskets, hampers and dried or preserved flowers.

It is also a wedding florist, with bridal bouquets and corsages and an enquiry form for wedding decoration. Add-ons such as cakes, wine and soft toys can be bundled into one delivery, and seasonal ranges appear for Chinese New Year and Mother's Day.

It makes hand bouquets and hampers. There is no web shop, so send a photo of the style you want and your budget on WhatsApp and the shop will quote.

Lip Sin Floral Enterprise

Lip Sin has a shop in Sungai Nibong, south of Gelugor on the way to Bayan Lepas, and a second branch in Taman Chai Leng, Perai, which makes it handy for both sides of the bridge. Customers mention afternoon orders arriving within about two hours, with a photo sent once delivered.

The catalogue spans hand bouquets, flower boxes and baskets, bridal flowers, graduation and newborn gifts, wreaths and condolence stands. Lip Sin also runs a floral art school with flower-arranging classes.

Bamboo Green Florist

Bamboo Green has been in business since 1984 and is the best-known florist on the mainland, based in Bukit Mertajam. Its signature is an "omakase" service: you choose a mood or colour and a budget, and the florist designs the piece from what is freshest that day.

Beyond hand-tied bouquets and vase arrangements it sells bloom boxes, condolence flowers, orchids, preserved flowers and add-ons such as cakes, fruit and wine. For Kuala Lumpur and other states it arranges delivery through partner florists.

These services have no walk-in counter, but they publish clear prices and cut-off times, which makes them easy to use from a hotel room or from overseas.

SweetLife & Co.

SweetLife & Co. is a George Town-based florist that takes almost all of its orders online or by WhatsApp. It is one of the cheaper Penang names, with fresh bouquets starting at RM89 and free same-day delivery when you order before 4 pm.

It covers roses, sunflowers, tulips and hydrangeas as well as soap flowers, preserved flowers, flower boxes and baskets. It also has a large range of grand-opening flower stands, which is useful if you need a stand delivered to a new shop the same day.

BloomThis

BloomThis is a national online florist that includes Penang in its free same-day delivery zone when you order by 5 pm. Its bouquets follow a consistent Western style, and the website shows what you will receive.

It is a sensible fallback when a local shop is fully booked, though prices start higher than SweetLife or Flower Chimp. Around Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Chinese New Year, order a few days ahead rather than relying on same-day slots.

Flower Chimp

Flower Chimp is a Selangor-based online florist with a dedicated Penang delivery page; local florists handle the island deliveries. With bouquets from RM79 it has the lowest starting price of the options here.

Its 5 pm cut-off, shared with BloomThis, is the latest on this list, which makes it the one to try for a late-afternoon order. Check the delivery fee at checkout, as it varies by location.

Tips for buying from a florist in Penang

Local customs and occasions

• Funerals: white flowers, particularly white chrysanthemums, are the traditional choice for Chinese funerals and wakes, along with wreaths and condolence stands sent to the funeral parlour. For the same reason, avoid all-white bouquets as a gift for a birthday, a new baby or a hospital visit.
• Grand openings: new businesses in Penang receive tall flower stands with a ribbon carrying the sender's name and a good-luck message. Red, gold and bright mixes are usual. Order a day ahead if you can, give the exact shop lot and opening time, and check the wording on the ribbon.
• Temples and garlands: jasmine and marigold garlands are offered at Hindu temples and used at weddings and festivals.
