About Penang Batik Factory
Penang Batik Factory in Teluk Bahang, on the island's north-west coast, is a working batik workshop with a showroom attached. Entry is free and no booking is needed. A short guided demonstration of five to ten minutes shows artisans applying wax by hand and with wooden blocks, then dyeing the cloth in layers.
The shop stocks batik dresses, shirts, scarves, placemats, cushion covers, wall hangings, bags and small gifts such as kites. Most visits take around 20 minutes, and there is no café on site. It is about 45 minutes from George Town and ten minutes past Batu Ferringhi, so it fits best on a day that also takes in Penang National Park or the Tropical Fruit Farm. Prices vary by item, so ask staff for the cost of specific pieces.
