ESCAPE Penang
Last updated: October 2026
ESCAPE Penang is an outdoor adventure and water theme park set in forest at the foot of the Teluk Bahang Dam, on the north-west side of Penang Island. Instead of big powered rides, it is built around climbing, swinging, sliding and zipping: rope courses, zip lines, giant swings, obstacle courses and water slides, more than 35 rides and games in all. Since it opened in 2012 it has added a water park and collected four Guinness World Records, including the world's longest tube water slide at 1,111 metres.
One ticket covers every ride, and tickets are sold online only. This guide covers the park's history, its zones and record-breaking rides, tickets and opening hours, how to get there and what to bring, checked in October 2026.

History of ESCAPE Penang
ESCAPE was created by Sim Leisure Group, founded and led by Datuk Sim Choo Kheng, a Penang-born entrepreneur. He has described the park as a throwback to his own "free-range" childhood of simple outdoor play, and the company sums up its approach as "low tech, high fun", measuring success in "smiles per hour" rather than in thrills or ride counts. Visitors are grouped not by age bands but as little kids, big kids (13 to 60) and super kids (over 60).
The site has its own history. It was the construction area for the Teluk Bahang Dam, and the park's administration buildings reuse quarters that once housed the dam workers. To turn the cleared land back into shaded forest, Sim Leisure transplanted more than 100 large trees rescued from construction sites around the island. Buildings use green roofs and recycle rainwater from the gutters.
The first section, ESCAPE Adventureplay, was officially opened on 8 December 2012 by the then Chief Minister of Penang, Lim Guan Eng. A second phase, ESCAPE Waterplay, opened to the public on 24 September 2017 and was officially opened on 16 December 2017; it doubled the park from about 11 to 22 acres and added more than 20 new games. The total land leased to the park is about 44 acres.
On 9 November 2019 the park opened its 1,111-metre tube water slide, certified by Guinness World Records as the world's longest. In May 2022 it added the 1,135-metre zip coaster, also a world record, and in early 2025 two more records were announced: the world's largest tipping bucket (28,757 litres) and the world's longest tubby racer (453.3 metres). Sim Leisure has since opened ESCAPE Challenge in Petaling Jaya and taken on other parks. ESCAPE Penang received about 240,000 visitors in 2024, according to Bernama.
What to Do at ESCAPE Penang
Adventureplay
The dry park is a series of activity zones in the trees: high and low rope courses, climbing walls, zip lines, giant swings, a chairlift and obstacle courses that test balance and nerve rather than speed. Named attractions include Monkey Business, Flying Lemur, the Monkey School and AK Academy for younger children. Some rides have minimum height or age limits, so check these on the website if you are bringing small children.
Waterplay
Waterplay, below the dam, has water slides, pools and splash games. Look out for the Banana Flip, the record tipping bucket, which takes about 10 minutes to fill with its 28,757 litres before tipping over, and the 453.3-metre tubby racer, which reaches speeds of over 30 km/h through the rainforest.
Gravitiplay
Gravitiplay holds the two longest rides. The record tube water slide winds for 1,111 metres down a forested hillside, roughly a four-minute ride down a slope of about 70 metres. The 1,135-metre zip coaster runs along a steel track fixed to the tree line, giving the feeling of a zip line with the turns of a roller coaster.
BASE CAMP
For a longer stay, ESCAPE sells two-day, one-night packages with an overnight stay at its BASE CAMP site, plus programmes for schools, team-building groups and birthday parties.

Tips for Visiting ESCAPE Penang
- Book online in advance. You cannot buy tickets at the gate, and advance bookings are cheaper.
- Arrive at opening. Queues for the zip coaster and the long slide build up from late morning, especially at weekends and in school holidays.
- Bring proper swimwear. Only swimsuits and religious swimwear are allowed on the water rides, to protect the filtration systems. Bring a change of clothes, a towel and enclosed shoes for the rope courses.
- Use a locker. Lockers are available (about RM5 a day), and loose items such as phones and glasses are a risk on the high rides.
- Protect against sun and rain. Most of the park is outdoors. Use sunscreen and drink plenty of water; heavy rain or lightning can pause some rides.
- Eat on site or in Teluk Bahang. The park has a food court, and the seafood restaurants of Teluk Bahang village are a few minutes away.
- Combine nearby sights. Entopia is next door, and the Tropical Spice Garden and Penang National Park are a short drive away.
