About Penang Ferry Night Crossing

The ferry between George Town and Butterworth is the cheapest way to see a Penang night view from the water. The 10 to 15 minute crossing gives you the George Town waterfront and the KOMTAR tower lit up behind you, the Penang Bridge in the distance to the south and the mainland lights ahead. The current boats, in service since 2023, carry pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles only.

The adult fare is RM2 each way and payment is cashless (Touch 'n Go card or eWallet, bank card, GrabPay or Boost). Ferries run every 20 to 30 minutes for most of the day, but after 9 pm on weekends the gap can stretch to 60 to 90 minutes, so check the Penang Port schedule before you go and do not cut it fine for the last boat back (around 11 pm from Butterworth). The island terminal is a short walk from the clan jetties and Sora Penang.
