About Penang Hill Heritage Trail

The Heritage Trail is the steepest way up Penang Hill on foot: about 2.6 km one way with more than 1,200 steps and around 700 metres of climbing, following the line of the funicular past the Middle, Claremont and Viaduct stations. Most hikers take about two hours to the top, then ride the funicular down (check the current one-way fare at the counter).

There is no fee and no permit. Start early to beat the heat, carry at least a litre and a half of water, and take a Grab to the trailhead on weekends when the car park fills. The trail was closed in October 2025 after a small landslip, so check with the Penang Hill Corporation (penanghill.gov.my) or at the Lower Station that it is open before you set off.
