About Belacan and Sambal
Belacan is a fermented shrimp paste that is toasted and pounded with chilli to make sambal belacan, the hot relish served with Malay and Nyonya meals. Tan Kim Hock sells belacan powder at RM6.90 for 140 g and a ready-made sambal belacan at RM8.50 for 70 g, and San Shu Gong sells several sambal pastes, including Nyonya and anchovy versions, for about RM10 to RM12.
Cincalok, a salty fermented krill relish that originated in Melaka, is the other famous local condiment. We could not confirm a particular shop stocking it this month, so ask at the local-product shops or look for jars at a supermarket. Pack all shrimp pastes in sealed bags, because the smell is strong.
