About Church of the Assumption

The Church of the Assumption traces its parish to 1786, when Eurasian Catholics arrived from Kedah on the feast of the Assumption, the same year Penang was founded. The present twin-towered building dates from the 1860s and served as the diocese's cathedral until the 2000s. A RM2.5 million restoration was completed in 2016.

Visitors may enter quietly during weekday opening hours. Next door, a small diocesan museum covers the history of the Catholic Church in Penang. It is a short walk from St George's Church and the E&O Hotel.
