About Bukit Mertajam Recreational Forest (Cherok Tokun)

Bukit Mertajam, at 545 metres the highest hill on the Penang mainland, is the main hiking spot on the Seberang Perai side. The recreational forest at Cherok Tokun has paved and stepped paths through secondary jungle, streams and big buttress-rooted trees, and the main route to the summit is about 3.5 km one way, roughly two hours up and one hour down. A popular viewpoint loop of about 5.6 km takes two and a half to three hours.

Entry and parking are free, and there are toilets near the car park. The forest reopened in 2024 after slope repairs, and it is most crowded on weekend mornings. It is on the mainland east of Seberang Jaya, so it pairs well with the Penang Bird Park in Seberang Jaya.
