About ŌNO Specialty Coffee & Matcha
ŌNO (it posts as Story of Ono) ranked eighth on The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops 2026 list, up from ninth the year before, the highest placing for any cafe in Malaysia. It opened in December 2021 and was founded by Shaun Liew, a two-time Malaysia Brewers Cup champion, roaster Kent Wong and Syun Hattori, founder of Niko Neko Matcha. The menu splits evenly between single-origin coffee, brewed by the method of your choice, and ceremonial-grade matcha.
Food centres on Japanese-style sandos: chicken katsu, strawberry, and a hojicha ogura sando with homemade red bean paste. Sit at the counter to watch the baristas work. SS2 is in Petaling Jaya, about 20 to 30 minutes by Grab from central KL depending on traffic. Expect a queue at weekends given the ranking.
