Selangor Attractions: 13 Places Outside Kuala Lumpur

Selangor attractions: the Lord Murugan statue and plaza at Batu Caves seen from the temple stairs

Selangor attractions range from cave temples and theme parks beside Kuala Lumpur to a fishing island, paddy fields and a hill fort on the coast. This guide covers 13 places in the state outside the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory, checked for October 2026, and each entry names its town. Places inside the capital are in the KL attractions guide.

The list is shorter than our Penang and KL guides because we only included places we could confirm. Where we could not find a current schedule or price, the entry says "Check hours before visiting" instead of guessing. Temples, mosques and churches are in the Selangor temples guide, and the evening spots are in the Selangor night views guide. Beaches, parks and waterfalls will be in the Selangor nature guide.

The rainbow-painted stairs up to the Temple Cave at Batu Caves

Batu Caves is a limestone hill in Gombak, about 13 km north of central Kuala Lumpur, and it sits just across the state line in Selangor. A 42,7-metre gold statue of Lord Murugan stands at the foot of 272 rainbow-painted steps that climb to the Temple Cave, a tall natural chamber with Hindu shrines. The cave itself is covered in the Selangor temples guide.

Entry to the Temple Cave is free. The Ramayana Cave and Cave Villa at the base are run separately and charge small fees, and guided Dark Cave tours are booked through a separate operator, so ask at the site or check ahead. Cover your shoulders and knees; sarongs can be rented at the stalls for around RM5. Long-tailed macaques live on the steps and snatch food and bags. Go before 9 am to climb in the cool. The KTM Komuter Batu Caves line ends a short walk from the entrance.

Part of the Sunway Lagoon water park at Bandar Sunway, Selangor

Sunway Lagoon is a multi-park resort in Bandar Sunway that opened on 29 April 1993 and covers about 88 acres. One ticket covers a water park, an amusement park, a wildlife park, an extreme park (X Park), the Scream Park and the Nickelodeon-themed Lost Lagoon. Captain Quack Land opened in December 2024, and the RM30 million Wild Chase Water Coaster opened in May 2025.

The official site lists the theme park as open Wednesday to Monday from 10 am to 11 pm, with the Night Park from 6 pm, and closed on Tuesdays except during Malaysian school and public holidays. Ticket prices change often and buying online in advance is usually cheaper, so check the current price before you go. Bring swimwear and plan a full day. Sunway Pyramid mall is next door, and the BRT Sunway Line has a stop for the park. Individual rides can close without notice, so check the operator's announcements on the day.

Zoo Negara

Hulu Kelang, 68000 Ampang, Selangor ยท Daily 9 am โ€“ 5 pm ยท RM93 non-Malaysian adult / RM55 Malaysian adultGoogle Maps ยท Verified Oct 2026

Zoo Negara is Malaysia's national zoo, opened in 1963 on a hilly 61,5-acre site in Hulu Kelang, about 5 km from the city centre, and run by the Malaysian Zoological Society. Its website says it keeps more than 4.000 animals from 325 species, including Malayan tigers, Asian elephants and orangutans. Giant pandas have also been shown at its panda conservation centre, so check that exhibit is open before you plan around it.

The zoo opens daily from 9 am to 5 pm. The official site lists adult tickets at RM93 for foreign visitors and RM55 for Malaysians (RM60 for i-Kad and work-pass holders), and RM48 or RM28 for children aged 3 to 12; tickets are sold online and at the entrance. Allow at least three hours and wear comfortable shoes because the paths are steep. A tram runs around the grounds for an extra fee. The zoo is in Ampang Jaya, just outside the KL boundary, and most visitors arrive by Grab or car.

Red LED trees and coloured light sculptures at i-City, Shah Alam, after dark

i-City is a 72-acre development beside the Federal Highway in Shah Alam that opened in 2002 and calls itself the City of Digital Lights. Its LED-lit gardens are the draw after dark, and CNN Travel named it among the brightest and most colourful places in the world in 2017. Paid attractions inside include the SnoWalk, which keeps a snowy arctic setting below 5 degrees Celsius, the WaterWorld water park and the Red Carpet 2 wax museum, plus the large Central i-City mall and two hotels.

Walking the lit grounds is free, while each attraction sells its own tickets. A Wikivoyage entry updated in May 2025 gives SnoWalk hours of 10 am to 1 am and prices of RM10 to RM30, but opening times and ticket prices change, so check with the attraction before you go. Shah Alam is about 30 to 45 minutes from central KL by car or Grab, depending on traffic. See also i-City at night.

Sepang International Circuit is the Petronas-run motorsport complex near KLIA, about 85 km and 30 minutes by road from Kuala Lumpur according to the circuit's own site. The main track is 5.543 km long with 15 corners and 8 straights. Beyond race weekends, the official website lists circuit tours, the Sepang International Kart Circuit, open track days for cars, bicycles and electric vehicles, and a Driving Experience Centre.

There is no fixed walk-in schedule that we could confirm, so choose an activity or event first and book through the official site. The 2026 calendar on the site includes the Sepang 1000KM Endurance Race on 18 to 21 November 2026. Public transport is limited, so most visitors drive or take a Grab from KLIA.

Bukit Melawati

Bukit Melawati, 45000 Kuala Selangor ยท Open daily; individual sites keep their own hours (check on arrival) ยท Hill entry free; weekend tram reported at RM3 adult / RM1 childGoogle Maps ยท Verified Oct 2026

The white lighthouse on Bukit Melawati, Kuala Selangor, with trees around it

Bukit Melawati is a hill fort overlooking the mouth of the Selangor River in Kuala Selangor, about 70 km north-west of Kuala Lumpur. The lighthouse on top was built by the Dutch in 1794, refurbished by the British in 1907 and reopened in 1910; it stands 27 metres tall. Fort remains and cannons are scattered over the hill, a small museum shows weapons and old coins, and the Royal Mausoleum of early Selangor sultans is closed to the public.

Silvered leaf monkeys and long-tailed macaques live on the hill. They grab plastic bags and food, so keep both out of sight and do not feed them. Wikivoyage reports a tram on weekends for RM3 adults and RM1 children. The hill pairs easily with the evening firefly boats at Kampung Kuantan, which are a short drive away.

Kuala Selangor Fireflies

Kampung Kuantan, 45000 Kuala Selangor ยท Evening boat rides after dark; check times before visiting ยท Check the boat fare before visitingGoogle Maps ยท Verified Oct 2026

The berembang trees along the Selangor River at Kampung Kuantan hold one of the largest firefly colonies in the world. After dark, male fireflies flash in near-unison, and visitors watch from small rowed sampans for about 20 minutes. The area is a night trip from Kuala Lumpur of about 70 km.

Boats run in the evening only. Published fares and times differ between sources and we could not confirm a current schedule, so check both with the operator before you set off and aim to arrive soon after dark. The display is best on dark, dry nights, and flash photography and torches are not allowed. Bring mosquito repellent and expect queues at weekends. There is no public transport, so go by car, Grab or an evening tour.

Sekinchan Paddy Fields

Sekinchan, 45400 Sabak Bernam ยท Fields can be viewed from the roads at any time; harvest timing varies ยท Free to view; some farms charge for toursGoogle Maps ยท Verified Oct 2026

Paddy fields in Sekinchan, Sabak Bernam, Selangor

Sekinchan is a coastal town in Sabak Bernam district, about 100 km north-west of Kuala Lumpur, and one of the main rice-producing areas in Malaysia. Visitors come for the flat, well-irrigated paddy fields, local rice mills that sell rice by the bag, a fishing village near the old jetty at Redang Beach, and seafood restaurants.

The fields are green during growing season and gold close to harvest, and the timing of each harvest shifts from year to year, so check recent local posts before you go if you want golden fields. Stay on the roads and field edges, as the paddy is working farmland. The town is a day trip by car and combines well with the Kuala Selangor sights further south.

The Mah Meri are one of the Orang Asli groups of peninsular Malaysia, and many live on Pulau Carey (Carey Island) in Kuala Langat. The Mah Meri Cultural Village at Kampung Sungai Bumbun introduces their culture to visitors, and the community is known for its wood carvings. Pulau Carey is connected to the mainland by road and is roughly an hour from Kuala Lumpur.

We could not confirm current opening hours or ticket prices from a recent source, so contact the village or check its social pages before travelling. Ask first before photographing people, and buy crafts directly from the carvers where you can.

Galleries cover arts and culture of the Malay sub-groups and Chinese communities, natural history dioramas, prehistory, Islamic history and Malaysian sport, and vehicles including armoured cars, aeroplanes and locomotives are shown outdoors.

We could not find a current published schedule, so check opening hours and admission with the museum before you go. It sits near the civic centre and pairs with the Blue Mosque, which is covered in the Selangor temples guide.

The entrance of the Orang Asli Museum in Gombak

The Orang Asli Museum in Gombak opened on 29 September 1987 and is run by the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA). It presents the history and traditions of the indigenous peoples of peninsular Malaysia and has a library and a small theatre hall.

Tourism Selangor said in August 2026 that entry is free. We could not confirm current opening hours from a recent source, so call or check official channels first. The museum is on the north-eastern edge of the Klang Valley, so it is easiest by car or Grab.

Pulau Ketam

A fishing boat and stilt buildings beside the water at Pulau Ketam

Pulau Ketam, or Crab Island, is an island village in the mangroves off Port Klang. About 2.000 people lived there in 2016, mostly Hokkien and Teochew Chinese fishing families, and houses stand on wooden stilts above the tide. There are no cars: people walk, cycle and use plank bridges. The island was the main filming location for the 2015 film Paint My Love.

Daily ferries link the island to the Port Klang jetty, and Wikivoyage describes a trip of around 30 minutes by boat from Klang. KTM trains run to Port Klang station. Allow a half day, eat seafood at the village restaurants, and check the return ferry time before you wander off.

Klang Little India

Jalan Tengku Kelana, Klang ยท Shops mostly daytime to evening; check by shop ยท Free to walkGoogle Maps ยท Verified Oct 2026

A street in Klang Little India with Masjid India Muslim Tengku Kelana in the background

Klang's Little India along Jalan Tengku Kelana is described by Wikivoyage as the biggest Indian street in Malaysia. The shops sell saris, textiles, jewellery and Indian groceries, and food stalls and restaurants serve South Indian dishes. The street is busiest before Deepavali, when decorations and extra stalls fill the pavements.

Klang is a royal town and the old capital of Selangor, and the street fits into a walking day with Sultan Sulaiman Mosque. Go in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat, and check halal status at each eatery if it matters to you.

How to Plan a Selangor Attractions Trip

Group places by direction. North of KL, Batu Caves, Zoo Negara and the Orang Asli Museum are all in the Gombak and Ampang Jaya side and fit one day. West and south-west, Sunway Lagoon, i-City and the Shah Alam museum are a short drive from each other, with Klang and Pulau Ketam further along the Federal Highway. Kuala Selangor and Sekinchan are a full day trip on the north-west coast, and Sepang and the Mah Meri village are on the southern side near KLIA.

Traffic on the Federal Highway and the main roads into KL is heavy at weekday rush hours and on Friday evenings, so leave early. Most sights outside the Klang Valley need a car or a Grab, and public transport covers Batu Caves, Sunway Lagoon and Port Klang best.
