Johor Bahru Nature and Outdoors: City Parks, Mangroves and a Waterfall

Johor Bahru nature and outdoors: tall mangrove trees with reddish trunks in Tanjung Piai National Park, Pontian

Johor Bahru nature and outdoors starts in two council parks in the city and stretches out to mangrove coasts, rivers and forest within a day's drive. Johor Bahru (JB) is a busy border city, so for proper green space most people drive out: south-west to the national parks at Tanjung Piai and Pulau Kukup, north-east to Kota Tinggi, or east to the mangroves behind Desaru. This guide covers 6 places checked for October 2026: two city parks and four day trips.

One popular hike is missing on purpose. The Johor Forestry Department closed Gunung Pulai Eco-Forest Park 1 near Kulai to all visitors from 21 October 2026 for slope repairs, until further notice. Beaches and the Mersing islands are in Johor Bahru beaches and islands, and Legoland and other sights are in the Johor Bahru attractions guide.

Parks in Johor Bahru City

Both are public parks run by the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) off Jalan Tasek Utara, 1,5 to 3 km from the city centre and a short Grab ride apart.

Hutan Bandar MBJB, the Johor Bahru City Forest, is a 50-acre (about 20 ha) recreation park where the council kept the original landform and cut as few trees as possible. Planning began in 1987 with help from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Seven small lakes sit close together among the trees and are used for fishing contests, with paths for walking and jogging, a children's adventure playground and a 16-stall food court, Gerai Atap Belian.

Inside the park is the Johor Bahru Orchid Garden (Taman Orkid), opened in 2003 on about 10 acres, with displays of wild local orchids and a nursery. Locals come early in the morning and in the late afternoon to exercise; at midday it is hot, so bring water and insect repellent.

The brown lake at Taman Merdeka in Johor Bahru, with trees and park pavilions on the far bank

Taman Merdeka (Merdeka Park, also called Independence Park) is a 31-acre (12,5 ha) council park around a lake, officially opened in 2011. Its themed gardens tell the story of Malaysia's road to independence through sculptures, memorial lawns and buildings, among them the Sultan Abu Bakar memorial lawn and a garden on the Japanese occupation.

For most visitors it is a place for a walk or a jog around the water, with a jogging circuit, a viewing tower, an open-air auditorium and a children's pool. A 2020 university study found that most people come in the morning, which makes sense: there is little shade by midday. The lake water is brown, so it is for looking at, not for swimming.

Day Trips: a Waterfall, Mangroves and Two National Parks

These need a car or a hired driver and most of a day. Kota Tinggi and Desaru are north-east and east of the city; Tanjung Piai and Pulau Kukup are close to each other in Pontian district, to the south-west.

Kota Tinggi Waterfalls (Air Terjun Kota Tinggi) at Lombong is the best-known waterfall within a day trip of JB and is promoted by Tourism Johor as one of the main sights of Kota Tinggi district. The falls are about 36 m high and come down from Gunung Muntahak (634 m) into a series of shallow pools where families swim and picnic.

The rocks around the pools are slippery. Do not swim after heavy rain or when the water is high, fast or brown, and keep children within reach. Kota Tinggi town, on the way back to JB, is also the base for evening firefly boat trips: Tourism Johor lists several firefly parks along the Johor River.

Sungai Lebam Mangrove Cruise

Sungai Lebam, inland from Desaru Coast, Kota Tinggi district; day trip or overnight from JB, about 1 to 1,5 hours' drive ยท Tours by advance booking with JungleWalla ยท RM220 per person (minimum 4); private firefly boat RM1.000Book ahead ยท Birds and mangroves ยท Fireflies after dark ยท Google Maps ยท Verified Oct 2026

The Lebam River winds through mangrove forest a short drive inland from the Desaru Coast resorts. JungleWalla, the nature-tour operator featured by Desaru Coast, runs a 3-hour cruise with a naturalist guide past a small fishing settlement and a floating restaurant, ending with a stop at the Desaru Fruit Farm shop. Desaru Coast lists black-shouldered kites, herons and Pacific swallows among the birds to look for.

Published prices are RM220 per person for the day cruise (minimum 4, maximum 12) and RM1.000 per small boat, for up to 8 people, on the private after-dark firefly cruise. Both include free pick-up from hotels in the Desaru area, and a kayaking trip on the same river is also offered. Book online in advance; if a trip has to be postponed, the operator offers another date or a full refund.

Tanjung Piai is the southernmost point of mainland Asia, at latitude 1ยฐ16' North. The 325 ha national park, set up in 1997 and listed as a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 2003, protects the mangroves and mudflats of the cape. A 1,2 km network of boardwalks leads through the mangroves, and Johor National Parks says it is one of the few places where you can see Singapore and Indonesia at the same time.

It is the smallest but most visited of Johor's national parks. Ship wakes once eroded the mangroves badly; offshore breakwaters and replanting have helped them grow back. Entry is RM5 for Malaysian adults and RM20 for foreign adults (students and seniors RM3 and RM10, OKU free), and parking is free. There is no direct bus: take a bus from Larkin to Pontian and a taxi from there, booking the return ride in advance, or drive. WhatsApp 013-744 0956.

Pulau Kukup National Park

Pulau Kukup, about 1 km off Kukup town, is one of the largest mangrove islands in the world. The 647 ha national park was set up in 1997 and became a Ramsar site in 2003. Boardwalks, viewing platforms and an observation tower take you into the mangroves, and the 807 ha of mudflats around the island are feeding grounds for migratory waterbirds at low tide.

Crab-eating macaques, mudskippers and wild boar live on the island. Entry fees are the same as at Tanjung Piai, and you need a boat across from the Kukup side, so call or WhatsApp the park office (013-744 0957) about crossings before you go. Kukup town is known for its seafood restaurants and floating chalets, and Tanjung Piai is a short drive away, so the two parks fit into one day.

Visiting Johor Bahru Nature and Outdoors: Practical Tips

Getting there. Hutan Bandar MBJB and Taman Merdeka are a short Grab ride from the city centre. The day trips are much easier by car: there is no direct bus to Tanjung Piai, and Grab cover around Desaru and Lombong can be thin, so arrange your ride back before you go.

Heat and rain. Start early, before the midday heat. From about November to February the Northeast Monsoon brings heavy rain; trails, boardwalks and waterfall rocks get slippery, and boat trips can be postponed.

Wildlife. Monkeys live in the mangroves at Pulau Kukup and Tanjung Piai; keep food in your bag and do not feed them. Bring insect repellent for the parks and the river trips.

Not in this guide. Gunung Pulai is closed to visitors from 21 October 2026, as above. Endau-Rompin National Park, the largest protected area in the southern half of Peninsular Malaysia, is in the far north-east of the state and needs at least one night, so it is not a day trip from JB.
