Melaka Attractions: 16 Heritage Sights, Museums and Rides

Melaka attractions: the red Stadthuys and its clock tower in Dutch Square, the centre of the old town

Melaka attractions are mostly packed into the UNESCO-listed old town of Melaka City (often spelt Malacca in English), where Portuguese, Dutch and British buildings stand a few minutes apart. This guide covers 16 places checked for October 2026: colonial landmarks, state museums, a river cruise, a revolving tower, Jonker Walk, two traditional neighbourhoods, Bukit China and two sights further out at Klebang and Ayer Keroh.

Temples, mosques and churches, including Christ Church and the ruins of St Paul's Church, are listed in the Melaka temples guide. Most state museums close on Mondays, so plan museum visits for Tuesday to Sunday.

A Famosa (Porta de Santiago)

Jalan Kota, Bandar Hilir, Melaka City · Outdoor ruin, open at all times · FreeFree · Outdoors · Google Maps · Verified Oct 2026

The stone Porta de Santiago gateway of A Famosa with visitors on the lawn behind it

A Famosa was the fortress the Portuguese built after taking Melaka in 1511. The Dutch expanded its walls after 1641, and the British demolished almost all of it in 1811. The Porta de Santiago gateway and the rebuilt Middelburg Bastion are the only parts left.

The gateway stands at the foot of St Paul's Hill, so most people combine it with the climb to the church ruins at the top and the museums along Jalan Kota. It takes about 15 minutes on its own and is busiest in the late afternoon.

The red Stadthuys building and clock tower in Dutch Square, Melaka, with a flower bed in front

The Stadthuys was built by the Dutch in 1650 as the office of the governor and is one of the oldest Dutch buildings in Asia. Today it holds the History and Ethnography Museum, which covers Melaka from the founding of the sultanate to independence and the daily life of its Malay, Chinese, Indian, Portuguese, Peranakan and Chitty communities.

One ticket from Perbadanan Muzium Melaka (PERZIM) also covers the Literature, Education and Governor's museums and the Admiral Cheng Ho gallery in the same complex. Allow at least an hour.

Dutch Square (Red Square)

Jalan Gereja and Jalan Laksamana, Bandar Hilir · Open at all times · FreeFree · Outdoors · Google Maps · Verified Oct 2026

Dutch Square is the red-painted heart of the old town: the Stadthuys, Christ Church, the Tan Beng Swee Clock Tower and Queen Victoria's Fountain all stand around it. The Dutch-era buildings were painted red in 1911, and the colour has stayed ever since.

It is the usual starting point for a walk across the river to Jonker Walk or up St Paul's Hill. Decorated trishaws wait here for passengers; agree the price before you get in. Christ Church is covered in the Melaka temples guide.

This is a timber reconstruction of the palace of the 15th-century Melaka Sultanate, based on descriptions in the Malay Annals. It was built between 1984 and 1986 using hardwood and wooden pegs instead of nails, and opened in July 1986.

Inside, three floors hold a throne room, royal chambers, costumes, weapons and dioramas of court life, around 1.350 items in all.

The Maritime Museum in Melaka with the wooden replica ship Flor de la Mar beside the white gallery building

The Maritime Museum is housed partly in a full-size replica of the Flor de la Mar, a Portuguese ship that sank off Sumatra in 1511 after the conquest of Melaka. The replica is about 36 metres long and was opened as a museum in 1994.

Exhibits trace Melaka's sea trade from the sultanate through the Portuguese, Dutch, British and Japanese periods, with maps, ship models and artefacts. The ticket also covers the second gallery across the road and the Royal Malaysian Navy museum.

Menara Taming Sari is a 110-metre gyro tower that opened in 2008. An air-conditioned cabin holding up to 80 people rises up the column and turns slowly, giving a full view of the old town, the Melaka Strait and the Straits Mosque on Pulau Melaka. A ride lasts about 7 minutes.

Tickets are sold for a date and time, and the operator says they cannot be changed once bought. There are separate day and night-view tickets; the night ride is in the Melaka night view guide.

Boats are run by the state river and coast corporation, Perbadanan Sungai dan Pantai Melaka.

Jonker Walk is the main street of Melaka's Chinatown, running from the bridge opposite the Stadthuys. Its shophouses date back as far as the 17th century and now hold antique shops, art galleries, goldsmiths, clog and beaded-shoe makers, souvenir shops and food stalls.

From Friday to Sunday the street closes to traffic from 6 pm to midnight for a night market, which gets very crowded on public holidays. On weekdays it is much quieter and better for looking at the buildings.

It was founded by Dr Tan Ta Sen and opened in 2005, the 600th anniversary of the first voyage, in an old building in Chinatown. In 2024 it became the first museum in Malaysia to join the International Congress of Maritime Museums.

Exhibits include documents, manuscripts, photographs and films from the independence period. It sits on Jalan Kota between A Famosa and the Sultanate Palace, so it is easy to add to a walk around St Paul's Hill.

Kampung Morten is a traditional Malay village in the middle of the city, named after J. F. Morten, a British land officer who laid it out in the 1920s. It was declared a heritage village in 1989 and still has more than 100 timber houses.

Villa Sentosa, built in 1920, is run by the family as a private living museum of village life and marked its 100th year in 2024. People live in the other houses, so keep your voice down and do not walk into compounds. The river cruise passes the village.

Bukit China

Bukit China (Chinese Hill) is linked by tradition with Hang Li Po, the Chinese princess said to have married Sultan Mansur Shah in the 15th century. The hill and two neighbours form a Chinese cemetery of more than 12.000 graves, some dating from the Ming dynasty, and paths run up through it.

At the foot of the hill are Hang Li Poh's Well, a wishing well walled in by the Dutch in 1677, and Poh San Teng temple, which is in the Melaka temples guide.

The centre is Portuguese Square (Medan Portugis), with a food court and restaurants around it. It is a residential area rather than a sight, so come for a meal in the evening and a look at the houses and chapel.

Visitors can go inside the hull, and displays explain the history and development of submarines, especially in Malaysia. It is a short drive from Klebang beach, so pair it with a sunset there.

Malaysia Heritage Studios is the former Mini Malaysia and ASEAN Cultural Park, first opened in 1986 with traditional houses from every Malaysian state. It reopened under the new name in December 2022 and was officially launched in February 2024.

The state houses are now galleries, and there is a maze themed on creatures from local folklore such as the Naga of Tasik Chini and the Mawas, with daily shows featuring Hang Tuah and Puteri Gunung Ledang. Allow half a day; it is outside the city, so you need a car or e-hailing ride.

Planning Your Day Among Melaka Attractions

Everything from A Famosa to Jonker Walk is within about 1 km, so walk. Start early at Dutch Square and the Stadthuys, cover the museums on Jalan Kota and St Paul's Hill before the midday heat, and cross to Chinatown for lunch.

Save the river cruise, Menara Taming Sari and Jonker Walk for late afternoon and evening, when it is cooler and the riverside is lit. Klebang, the Portuguese Settlement and Ayer Keroh need a car or an e-hailing ride.

Weekends and school holidays bring heavy traffic and full car parks in the old town. If you can, visit on a Tuesday to Thursday, and avoid Monday if museums are your priority.
