About The Waterfront Shoppes
The Waterfront Shoppes is the newest of the shopping malls in Penang. It soft-opened on 29 November 2026 on the Gelugor seafront as part of The Light City, a development by IJM and Perennial, and about 1,5 million sq ft over four levels is planned for more than 300 outlets. Anchors are a Mercato supermarket on the lower ground floor with imported groceries, Parkson and Decathlon, with Watsons, Guardian, Skechers and Samsung among the other shops.
For entertainment there is a nine-hall CMC Theatre cinema, the Xventure indoor adventure park (tickets from about RM40) and ELEMEN, an interactive digital art exhibition (RM48, until 14 February 2027). Restaurants include ParaThai, Tai Ho Jiak, Mr. Wu Taiwanese Cuisine and ZUS Coffee, and a 750-metre seafront promenade outside faces the Penang Bridge. Outlets are opening in phases, so some shops may still be closed.
Getting there: Grab is the easiest option, about 15 minutes from George Town outside peak hours. The basement car park has about 2.500 bays, with up to 5 hours of free parking until 30 November 2026 if you enter and exit with a bank card or Touch 'n Go card. The Penang Waterfront Convention Centre is in the same development.
