About Gula Melaka
Gula Melaka is a dark palm sugar made by boiling down the nectar of coconut palm flowers, and it gives cendol, onde-onde and many Nyonya kuih their caramel flavour. It is sold in hard cylinders or blocks and keeps for months, which makes it one of the easiest Melaka products to carry home.
Tan Kim Hock, whose founder began by boiling coconut nectar into sugar during the Second World War, sells its own gula Melaka for RM8,50 for 400 g. Its headquarters shop at 157 Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho is open 9 am to 6 pm daily, and there is a branch on Jonker Street.
