About Taman Merdeka

Taman Merdeka (Merdeka Park, also called Independence Park) is a 31-acre (12.5 ha) council park around a lake, officially opened in 2011. Its themed gardens tell the story of Malaysia's road to independence through sculptures, memorial lawns and buildings, among them the Sultan Abu Bakar memorial lawn and a garden on the Japanese occupation.

For most visitors it is a place for a walk or a jog around the water, with a jogging circuit, a viewing tower, an open-air auditorium and a children's pool. A 2020 university study found that most people come in the morning, which makes sense: there is little shade by midday. The lake water is brown, so it is for looking at, not for swimming.
