Sri Aruloli Thirumurugan Temple
Sri Aruloli Thirumurugan Hindu Temple, also known as the Penang Hill Hindu Temple, is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Penang. This temple started as a small sanctuary dedicated to the Hindu deity Murugan in the 1800s. Murugan, also known as Karthikeya, Subramanya and Skanda, is the Hindu god of war. The devotees installed a Murugan Vel or trident on the place of the shrine. As years passed, the temple was rebuilt and enlarged with the help of its devotees.
Sri Aruloli Thirumurugan Hindu Temple that we see today is inspired by the Dravidian architectural design of South India. It has four main parts, the temple proper – a shrine with a tower, a porch, gate towers, and pillar halls. There is a statue of Lord Murugan and a beautiful sculpture of Lord Nataraj on the sides of the temple’s entrance.
The Sri Aruloli Thirumurugan Hindu Temple is embellished with colorful and exquisitely ornate sculptures of Hindu deities. Devotees will find tranquillity in the surroundings especially it is located on top of a hill. Visitors can enjoy taking pictures of the sculptures of the Hindu gods and goddesses.
The important festivals and religious functions celebrated at this temple inclusive of the Kandha Sasthi Festival with Soora Samharam and Thirukalyanam, Thaipusam, Pangguni Utthiram, Vaigasi Visagam and our annual year prayer Aadi Kartigai.
