Dewan Sri Pinang

Dewan Sri Pinang is a multi-purpose auditorium between Lebuh Light and Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah, Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia. It is a strategic location for the concert, orchestra, seminar, and other programs. Dewan Sri Pinang has been the main location for George Town Festival events, government, and state events.

The original site of Dewan Sri Pinang which consists primarily of British administration quarters. 1897, by the time the Kelly Maps are surveyed, Edinburgh House, Rajani’s Lodge, Town, and City Hall have been constructed. Some small gardens appeared. By the mid-1920s, many of the British administration quarters have been demolished, including Edinburgh House.

During World War II, the site was utilized by the Japanese for medical purposes. Other buildings in the vicinity were partially destroyed by Allied bombing. By the early 1970s, Esplanade Road was extended and Jalan Tun Syed Barakbah opened. These infrastructure works formed part of a precinct revitalization plan that included the construction of Dewan Sri Pinang.

Dewan Sri Pinang was built in the early 1970s in the Brutalist architectural style spawned from the modernist architectural movement. Located next to the Town Hall, the building was completed in 1972.

For the last 40 years, Dewan Sri Pinang and the waterfront promenade have functioned as popular leisure eating and cultural spaces. It serves as a venue for live performances and is still one of the most popular auditoriums in Penang. For many years, the Penang Public Library used to be housed within Dewan Sri Pinang but has since been moved to Seberang Perai. On the other hand, the Penang State Art Gallery moved to Dewan Sri Pinang from the upper floor of the Penang State Museum, opening more additional space for itself as well as for the museum.
